One of the Mothers of Modern Photography
This picture was taken by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815 - 1879) of her niece Julia Duckworth. I love the sense of intimacy and vulnerability she captures in her photographs. It's unlike anything of her time.
Her career began at the age of 48 when she received a camera as a birthday present from her daughter. Her style was ridiculed by the professional photographers of her day but stood the test of time. Her closely cropped portraits have been copied by all the greats. And Julia was a meticulous business woman registering all her photographs for copyright protection with the Library of Congress.
It's why so much of her work has survived for our viewing pleasure.
