Can You be a Feminist & Still Like Porn?

Hi Betty & Carlin,

I feel in the last 3 weeks I have learnt more about myself and my body than in the last 10 years! Not only am I having better sex with my partner but I am also having better sex with myself! This has lead to feeling confident, happy and love for my body. It has also got me back in touch with feminism. I first considered myself a feminist after studying Sociology at college 4 years ago. However I never had anyone (other than my amazing feminist boyfriend) to talk to about it. But since discovering your site I joined the feminist network in my area.

I haven't been to a meeting yet but I was looking at their face book page and found that some of their ideas don't match my own. They are very much anti-porn, anti-playboy, anti-men's mags etc. I personally really enjoy certain porn, but I have found some porn makes me feel angry & degraded. I would love to know your thoughts on this. Do you believe porn contributes to degrading women? Sorry this is a long message!

Love you both so much!!
E

Dear E,

You have just discovered why some of us back in the 80's began to refer to ourselves as "pro-sex feminists." It was dis-heartening to hear about their current face book page. I just spoke to Carlin and we want to have a "pro-sex feminist" face book page.

When it comes to pornography some of it is bad, some good and some is in-between. It's like any other depiction of sex that ends up a question of personal taste. We cannot regulate or censor art in any form or we become a fascists regeme which I believe is taking place right now with the new Republican war against women. That's what I find degrading to women.

Women need to join forces and agree to disagree on sexual matters and move forward. We desperately need to teach young women about sex, birth control and how to enjoy orgasms with themselves first and then with a partner of either sex. So stay tuned.
