their own Bodysex workshops - live and virtual. There is an active community of "Bodysex Leaders", monthly facilitator meetings, book clubs and social media groups to support your journey.

Laura Bogush, Rosa Maria, and Celine Manon serve on the Betty Dodson Foundation Board of directors and run the certification program.

You're required to take one workshop, a second workshop with other women seeking certification, and then write a thesis you'll defend. Your thesis statement will describe your own sex history, how your family dealt with masturbation, what you believe is wrong with how the culture handles sexuality and what you would do to change it.

COVID UPDATE. All our live workshops are on hold until 2022. Our virtual Bodysex program counts as your first workshop. For your second workshop, you will be paired with another woman seeking certification with online sessions together with Carlin where you take each other through the rituals: education, genital show and tell, and the Rock n Roll orgasm technique.

The total fee for certification is $4,000 - two virtual Bodysex session fees of $500.00 plus one last donation of $3,000.00.

Mission:

Our goal is to certify women to hold their own Bodysex workshops so that the Betty Dodson method of self-love and sisterhood continues and expands to every country around the world.

When Betty and I first got together, we had this vision of a world map with red lights being illuminated every time someone clicked on D&R. Now we feel that those red lights represent women certified in the Betty Dodson method as each woman holds her own Bodysex workshops.

We will train, certify, and support each woman as she holds these workshops. There will be a learning curve and we will be available for your questions and to give you our feedback. It will take time to build a name for yourself. We want you to be successful and to honor the Betty Dodson brand.

The certification process will take one year to complete if you take a workshop in the Spring and a certification workshop in the Fall (or vice versa) and complete/present your thesis in a timely manner. It’s really up to you how long the process takes.

Benefits:

Betty Dodson Brand: All certified members will be granted a license to use the “Betty Dodson” brand in marketing their workshops. Your workshops can be marketed as an official “Betty Dodson Bodysex Workshop”. You will also receive the vulva flower logo that is displayed here on the site for your own use.

Advertising: All certified members will be granted advertising space on D&R.com to promote their workshops under “Bodysex”. Your ad will include a description/bio/pic of you and the upcoming dates of your workshop listed by region.

Direct Communication: Carlin will be available by email and zoom with any questions you have during the roll out of your workshops.

Diploma: All certified members will receive a diploma signed by Betty Dodson and Carlin Ross.

Requirements:

I. Participation in two Bodysex Workshops or two virtual Bodysex programs. For your first several groups, you’ll have your attendees send us an email describing their experience. This will help us better understand your skill level and what you need to work on.

You will make mistakes and that’s OK. We live in a sexually repressed culture and realize you may experience some negative reviews. We understand. You are creating a temple for female sexual expression. Here are the absolutes:

You need to choose an assistant. It’s nearly impossible to run a workshop by yourself. Pick someone who’s sex positive (they love sex) and are organized.

The floor must be carpeted. You can’t have women sitting naked on a hard wood floor. And laying down towels or yoga mats isn’t enough. There must be wall-to-wall carpeting or a large area rug so that every woman has carpet beneath her.

Temperature: We use little space heaters in the winter months to warm up the room before a workshop. It can’t be too warm on Day 1. Make sure there aren’t any drafts in your space and the place is nice and toasty.

NO MEN IN THE CIRCLE: You’ll get a ton of requests from men and husbands who want to join the circle. As soon as a man is present, everything changes. Women stop being honest and begin performing. Only women can take a Bodysex workshop.

NO CAMERAS: Cameras always affect our spontaneity. Even if women agree to photos don’t take them. This is an intense emotional experience and consent can’t be freely given.

All women entering the circle must be nude. Answer the door naked and ask them to remove their clothes right away. Don’t let them keep their bras on or wear a robe. It will break down the equality of the circle.

All the barbells and vibrators used in the circle must be sterilized. I take the barbells out of their packaging and I put them in a pot of water on the stove and bring it to a boil. Then I shut off the stove, pour out the hot water, and fill the pot with cold water to cool off the barbells. Let them sit in the cold water for 10 minutes or so and they’ll be ready to go. Women get to keep the barbells.

We do reuse the vibrators. After a workshop, I rub them down with a Clorox wipe and then a damp rag and store them in a clean box. Then, I do this process again right before a workshop and place them on the trays that sit alongside each person. The trays also hold a glass for water, a bottle of almond oil and a box of Kleenex.

You’re going to have to purchase back jacks for the women to sit on during the workshop. You can’t have women sitting on the floor because they’re backs will ache. Place a towel over each back jack to avoid any staining. Pick up some small throw pillows to use for extra back support and the "pillow fuck" that takes place the second day.

Have a large tray placed in the center of the circle and several candles. Betty always starts the workshop by lighting the candles. She prefers white to represent healing. It’s good idea to begin each group with the Breath of Fire (50 short belly breaths then two deep breaths followed by holding your breath for as long as it’s comfortable. Oxygen is energizing and it puts everyone more at ease

We always provide water and snacks. I’ve cut up veggies and small sandwiches but no one eats them. The women prefer fruit (berries, pineapple, watermelon), and some sort of cookies with chocolate. During erotic recess on Day 2, I bring in a pitcher of water with the cookies and place them on a tray in the middle of the circle. After a few orgasms, it’s nice to roll up and nibble on a cookie and rehydrate.

Pick up a freestanding mirror with an 8 inch surface and lamp that can be aimed for genital show & tell. You must sit next to the woman displaying her vulva so you can both look into the same mirror together. Bring her in close until your bodies touch. This is about non-sexual contact that is reassuring. This is about comfort and mothering.

Keep copies of Betty’s anatomy diagrams and use them at the end of genital show & tell so the women can gain a better understanding of their bodies. You don’t have to know everything but take them through the basics. And if you don’t know something don’t fake it. You can always ask us to clarify the material.

Menstruation: You can have your period and take a workshop. Day 1 they can use a tampon or menstrual cup. Day 2 they can use a sea sponge during penetration with the barbell. I suggest picking up some and having them on site: http://www.amazon.com/eBubbles-Natural-Silk-Sea-Sponges/dp/B0008GRS60/re...

Pregnancy. We’ve had several pregnant women take workshops. It’s always kind of magical. Also women who've had a breast removed due to cancer experience a healing. All scars from any surgery are badges of honor.

Enrollment:

Social media is invaluable for promoting your workshops. You should have a facebook fan page as well as your personal account. You should also have a twitter account and blog about your work. And when you write about the groups it’s about your experience – don’t share personal things women have shared. It’s about your reflections. Always blog first person. If you write something, send me the link and I’ll promote it over all of our social media accounts.

I recommend using paypal and have women make a down payment to reserve their spot in your workshop. That way you'll know they’re serious about showing up. You can use paypal for all your fees or accept the final monies in cash or check.

I manage all my enrollment over email and create a new contact group for each Bodysex workshop so I can communicate directly with the women from each workshop. Gmail is great for all of this. I also write down their email addresses in a book so I have a hard copy in case something catastrophic happens. It always pays to be organized.

I share my cell number with the women once they register and make their down payment. They need to know that if anything comes up they can contact you. I send out emails with all the information they need (date, location, time, price, my cell #) one month before the workshop, unless they’re traveling then I forward the address right away so they can make arrangements.

Then I send out a group email two weeks and again one week before each workshop with the same information so they don’t need to dig through their emails to find anything. When I send my group emails, I send it directly to my email address and bcc the women. You can’t share their email address with anyone without express permission.

Holding the Space:

No one can teach you how to be a workshop leader. Holding the space is something that you’re going to learn with each workshop. Just remember that leaders model what they want from their group. Always begin the group share (how you feel about your body/orgasm) by going first. Be honest. Don’t over talk or attendees will also over talk.

Set boundaries: I’ve seen Betty share and then before going around the circle announce, “I want to know how you feel about your body and your orgasm. I don’t want details about your partners. This is about your sexuality." Some women will focus on others to avoid talking first person about themselves.

Keep the circle moving. Don’t be afraid to break in and end a woman’s share if she’s going on too long. You can also state from the beginning that you want to hear from each woman but that we only have a certain amount of time for each share. Depending on the size of the group, each woman’s share should be 5-10 minutes max. Genital show & tell takes at least 2 or 2.5 hours, sometimes longer. It's OK to go overtime if necessary.

If a woman starts to cry, acknowledge her, but don’t let her take control of the group. Betty’s best line is, “I hear your pain, but we’re here to explore pleasure so we must move on.” In over 25 years of holding groups, Betty has only asked 2 women to leave the circle because they were not ready to explore pleasure. They need to work with a therapist to deal with their sexual abuse issues.

Since we started running groups again we haven’t had an issues with women needing to leave the workshop. I think that’s because they’re able to watch Betty Dodson’s Bodysex Workshop DVD, so they know what to expect when they sign up. It’s a good idea to ask attendees to watch the film before they book a space with you.

Don’t hesitate to ask women to speak up during the group shares. Most women have been conditioned to be soft talkers and that includes you. Make sure you ground your own voice and project it when you run a group. When I was a new attorney, I would video tape myself to see how I looked/sounded in the courtroom. You should record your voice, play it back, and listen to how you sound. You are leading with your voice. Betty said she used a tape recorder to listen to her own voice and learned to drop down to lower register.

Good posture is important when running a group. Sit tall and don’t slouch. It always helps to keep things playful. If there’s a moment to add some humor, do it. Laughter puts everyone at ease, including you. When we ran a group in Copenhagen, one of the women sitting down for genital show and tell noticed that she had some toilet paper on her labia. Betty smiled and asked, “Do you have a message?” Everyone laughed and later on several women “found” messages in their vulvas. No one was embarrassed and it became a unifying moment.

Another great Betty moment was when she farted and announced, “Anyone who farts gets a $1.00.” You’re sitting naked on the floor for hours, displaying your vulva, and masturbating. Natural body processes will happen. Make it fun and laugh away any embarrassment.

Genital Show & Tell:

Set up an area for genital show & tell on carpeting and put down a clean towel. Always start by showing the group your own vulva. Make yourself vulnerable. Talk about your fears or concerns and show all the structures: clitoris, labia, pc muscle, and urethral opening. Be honest about how your relationship with your vulva.

You’ll sit side-by-side with each woman looking into the same mirror. Don’t be afraid to get close with your bodies touching. It’s comforting to feel a body close to yours when you’re nervous. This is about maternal energy. You’re not a lover you’re a mother or big sister. This is non-sexual touch.

Turn on the lamp and look at her vulva in the mirror TOGETHER. Always say something positive about her vulva immediately by making a complimentary statement. If you can’t think of anything, then say, "Oh, she’s beautiful.”

Always begin with a vulva massage. Have her oil her hands and using long strokes, run them up and down her sex organ from bottoem to top, hand over hand. Next have her locate her clitoris and open her outer labia to view vestibule, the space between her inner lips where she can locate her urethral opening. It’s amazing how many women – even those who’ve given birth – have never known where they urinate from. Some thought it was the clitoris. The vaginal opening is rarely open. It sits at the bottom of her vulva and is different for every woman. In order to see it, she must penetrate herself first.

Also, you can describe what vulva “style” she has - Gothic, Renaissance,Art Deco, Danish modern – based on Betty’s vulva sketches. The women really enjoy this moment. It gives them a point of reference for their vulva.

Bodysex is NAMING OWNING SHARING & CELEBRATING

Take them through Betty’s anatomical diagrams that come from A New View of a Woman's Body. We’ve simplified the diagrams so only the main structures are labeled. The women love looking at the diagrams.

The focus here is that the clitoris is a woman’s primary sex organ. The urethral sponge ie the g-spot is part of the internal clitoris. Some women enjoy having their urethral sponge stimulated by applying pressure to the ceiling of the vagina. Many also enjoy stimulation right at the vaginal opening because there are more nerve endings there. Once inside the vagina, most women enjoy the feeling of being “full”.

Some women release fluid (female ejaculate) which is dilute urine with prostate fluid that amounts to no more than a teaspoon full. Some women squirt BUT this isn’t an orgasm. It's simply the release of ejaculate. The clitoris reigns supreme when it comes to female orgasms.

Reassemble in the Circle:

Genital show & tell is an intense experience. Once we look at each other’s vulvas, we’re bonded in sisterhood. It’s good to reassemble in the circle and ask the group if anyone would like to share something. Have a nice relaxed group discussion before you break for the day.

Most of the women will want to go out to dinner. Betty and I prefer to have dinner together and let the group go out alone. It’s good for the women to have time together and for the group leaders to share feedback before Day 2.

Day 2 Group Share:

Go around the circle and have each woman share how she’s feeling and what she did last night. You’ll notice that most of the women will say that they slept really well. Day 1 is a lot to process and it can knock you out. I see a physical change in the women’s faces from Day 1 to Day 2. They’ve experienced a huge release and connection with their bodies and each other. It’s always beautiful.

Betty’s Rock ‘n Roll Orgasm Demonstration:

Next you ask all the women to gather around you and your assistant who is your “stunt cunt” to demonstrate Betty’s Rock ‘n Roll orgasm technique. We used to simply explain the technique but women were confused. This kind of visual demonstration is giving women permission to look closely which further breaks down any shame.

Then go through all the items on their tray. Have them turn on their vibrators and experience each setting. Next, ask the group to stand with their vibrators in hand. That way they will have a visual of each other. Demonstrate running their vibrators from the top of their heads down over their breasts to their clits. Betty likes to keep it all humorous. She's been known to play air guitar with her vibrator etc. Have them gyrate their hips doing bumps and grinds while they actively fuck their vibrators.

Erotic Recess:

Now it's time for everyone to spread out their towels so they can lie down on them. Next you can talk them through slow penetration with the barbell. Be sure they use almond oil before dong slow penetration while squeezing and releasing their PC muscle. Once the barbell is inserted, the weight will keep it in place.

When you declare it's time for “erotic recess,” let them know it's not necessary to have an orgasm to enjoy the energy in the circle. This Takes performance anxiety out of the equation. Betty didn't have an orgasm when we initiated this new round of groups. At any point a group leader can stand to observe how everyone is doing. You can also pull up along side a women to help her by answering any concern she might have…encourage all the women to roll up and look at each other.

After 40-50 minutes, take them through the orgasm positions we have named the pillow fuck & Indian style. All the vibrators are put on top of the pillow so women can practice being on top. Indian style is sitting up holding the vibrator between her feet. Women love both of these positions because they can look at each other and make comments that creates laughter making sex fun. I like to keep a pitcher of water with fruit and cookies in the middle of the circle on a tray for anyone who wants to take an orgasm break. Conversations break out and that’s fine. This is about play, not performance.

Be flexible with your timing. If everyone is still going, continue. Once most everyone has stopped, then declare the end of erotic recess. Use your best judgment.

Group Massage:

Everyone loves group massage. After we've all had orgasms, or watched each other have orgasms, we are all in a good mood. Begin by laying down two blankets and have the women use their towels to kneel on while they take turns sharing massage. Make sure the blankets are soft and clean. Play some ambient music or leave the room quiet. Massage is about non-sexual touch. The leader counts off the group randomly pointing at each woman calling out number one or two. It's best to let the numbers fall where they may. Don't try to put certain people together. These smaller groups will consist of 4 or 5 women massaging one person at a time.

Each woman will be massaged for five minutes on each side. After the givers oil their hands, they hold them over the woman in the middle and you and your assistant say outloud: "The laying on of hands" and everyone touches the woman being massaged at the same time. Keep time and make sure everyone gets her massage.

When group massage is over, women can wipe off the excess almond oil with their towels. Also, pick up some baby wipes to also be used.

Reassemble in the circle:

Request women sit on their towels in a small circle so they can hold hands – the right hand is down to send, and the left hand is up to receive the energy. Then ask everyone to make eye contact with each woman in the circle. Finally, each woman shares one word – something that they’re feeling or thinking that sums up their experience. The final share.

Then, Betty has the women throw their hands up into the air and shake them to release all our orgasm energy into the world followed by whoops and shouts of joy and laughter.

Follow Up:

The women will most likely ask for each other’s email addresses. I ask their permission and, if it’s given, I send out a group email so everyone can contact each other. I also like to thank the group for coming to the workshop. For each of our workshops, women have started facebook fan pages to keep in touch. I always join them but rarely post but it’s good to keep the lines of communication open.

It’s good to write up your experience after each group – what happened, any epiphanies, what you could have done better. Betty keeps a written record of each of her private sessions. I blog about each workshop. It’s good for your learning curve to reflect. Do it that night or the next day when it’s all fresh in your head.

Day 1 Timeline

Group share (how do you feel about body/orgasm) = 2 hours
Bathroom/snack break = 15 minutes
Genital Show & Tell = 2-2.5 hours
Bathroom/snack break = 15 minutes
Reassemble in the circle (ask if there is anything they want to share or any questions) = 15 minutes

Day 2 Timeline

Group share (what they did the previous eveninh or how they're feeling) = 30 minutes
Bathroom/snack break = 15 minutes
Demonstrate Rock 'n Roll orgasm/Q&A = 30 minutes
Erotic Recess = 2-2.5 hours (I bring in snacks during last hour)
Group Massage = 1 hour
Final circle = 15 minutes

Set Up Expenses:

Several of our certified women have crowdsourced their certification fees and set up expenses. Here's a breakdown of the set up expenses:

Back Jacks $34.95/each @ floorseating.com
Pussy mirror $19.99
Rechargeable Magic Wand $54.00/each (that's the wholesale price plus shipping)
Betty's Barbell $75.00/each (Betty insists on a 3 step polish which increases our cost)
Almond oil $10.85/each

Then you'll need to pick up some plastic trays, towels, and pillows (if you want to do the pillow fuck). I replace the towels once a year. Bed Bath & Beyond is the best place to shop - and the pricing depends on the quality of towel you select.

Assuming you're running groups with 10 women including yourself, your set up expenses would be roughly $1,800.00 - $2,000.00. You can always have the women bring their own vibrators and dildos. You don't have to use our barbell. I would suggest starting small but investing in the rechargeable magic wands and crowdsource as much as you can.

And if you want to resell products like the barbell, Magic Wand, mirrors and almond oil on your blogs/sites I would suggest joining Amazon Associates (Amazon's affiliate program). A young woman who has a history of little or no masturbation and has reached her mid to late-20s and is looking for her first orgasm, a battery driven vibrator can be a good choice. There are many of these vibrators available.

However, it you are in your thirties or older, the Magic Wand is also a good choice. If you are using a Wand, I recommend putting some kind of fabric between you and the vibrator to soften the vibes. Lately I've been putting a sock on mine. I use a thin or a thick one, depending upon my mood.

The Magic Wand vibrator only works on AC current so the company will not ship to countries with direct electrical current. However, there is a vibrator that works on batteries called the Mystic Wand. It’s like the Magic Wands little sister. This new one has five different settings. The low setting is good for young women who are beginners and the third setting has vibrations as strong as the Big Mama Magic Wand. The Mystic is smaller, quieter and adorable. Both vibrators are available from our sex shop. Another good vibrator is the Eroscillator that is compatible with both AC and DC current.

GETTING READY: You will need to gather a few basic items. If at all possible set aside at least an hour in a warm room that's completely private. Turn off the telephone and put your cell phone in another room. Although it's not necessary, it's also nice to have candle light and music of your choice.

For your genital exam you will need

1. a makeup mirror that stands alone with at least an eight-inch mirror surface.

2. A gooseneck desk lamp is the best or some light source that can be aimed between your legs..

3. A bottle of organic massage oil such as almond, coconut, apricot, avocado, etc.

4. A soft washcloth and a towel to sit on

5. The Magic Wand vibrator or a battery oporated one. For some women, the softer vibrations of a battery vibrator may be preferable. Or if you prefer, you can also use your hands. Ideally girls would use their hands until they enter their late twenties or early thirties.

6. Betty's Barbell for penetration. Or improvise with a peeled carrot or zucchini. The advantage of the Barbell is that the weight will hold it in place while you stimulate your clitoris.

GENITAL EXAM: To learn about the form and function of your vulva, it's essential to begin with a genital exam. Get a soft towel and put it on the floor with some kind of back support. Place the mirror so that you have a view of your entire genital area. Aim a bright light between your legs. Oil your hands. Now spend a few minutes doing an over-all genital massage while observing your vulva in the mirror. Enjoy the pleasurable feelings as you press, kneed and move your hands over the entire area.

Next spread your outer lips apart to explore your vulva's intricate internal design with its delicate folds. Locate your clitoris at the top of your vulva just below where your pubic hair begins. Find the shaft and hood of the clitoris. Pull the hood back so you can see your clitoral glans. With a well-oiled finger, touch the glans softly to understand why those 8,000 nerve endings are protected with the hood. Now massage your clitoris using different kinds of pressure from light to firm on either side, on top and underneath your clitoral glans. Observe the different sensations. Spread the inner lips apart with both hands. Locate your vaginal opening that will appear as small folds that will part when you enter with your finger. The vaginal vestibule is the recessed space inside your inner lips. See if you can locate your urethra, a tiny opening nestled somewhere in the vestibule below the clitoris and above the vaginal opening.

Arrange your genital flower in a manner you find most appealing. Take a few moments to appreciate the beauty of your magnificent sex organ. You might want to trim or shape your pubic hair and take a pussy portrait for your lover on Valentine's Day. Or enter your photo in my Genital Art Gallery.

THE PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLE: Consciously relax your vaginal muscles while taking several deep breaths. Then very slowly press your middle finger inside your vagina. Once inside, circle your finger feeling the contours of the vaginal barrel. Take another deep breath and relax all the surrounding muscles and focus primarily on the muscle that stops the flow of urine. Now squeeze and release this muscle on your finger. You will feel your vagina gripping your finger softly or firmly depending on the strength of your PC (pubococcygeus) muscle. Take your finger away and watch your entire genital area move from your clitoris to your anus when you contract the muscle by lifting up and squeezing. Do not bear down or push out. Lift and release. Lift and release. Be sure to check out how to do Kegel exercises under Betty's Vaginal Barbell.

BREATHING: Next lie down on your bed, a futon, or a blanket on the floor. Make sure you are comfortable and warm. Place a pillow under your head. Your feet are on the floor with your knees bent and both legs at a comfortable angle. Take a series of deep breaths exhaling with an audible sigh. Send loving thoughts to your body. During your masturbation session it's a good idea to be able to hear yourself breathing out loud. Getting oxygen into the blood stream is essential for clitoral engorgement. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. If your nose is stopped up, do both the in and out breath with your mouth. Most women tend to hold their breath during sexual arousal so make sure you are breathing fully.

PELVIC ROCKING: Avoid tensing up and holding your body rigid. Move your pelvis like Elvis. Roll your hips. Do a little dance lying down. Use movements that feel good. Loosen up and stretch. Smile. As your hips rock forward and back the muscles in your body flex and relax similar to an athlete in motion. Take a minute and dance to the music of your choice with rhythmic pelvic thrusting along with deep breathing and sounds of pleasure. Remember sex is about having fun and feeling good. During your entire masturbation session, a gentle rocking motion can be perpetual motion. Rest if you get tired.

PENETRATION WITH PC MUSCLE: Now that you are in touch with your PC muscle, you are ready to do slow penetration. If you are new to vaginal penetration begin with your finger. Then use a peeled carrot or zucchini gradually making them bigger. Just be aware that squeezing your vaginal muscle will tend to push the veggie dildo out so hold it with one hand. If you have Betty's Barbell, penetration virgins or postmenopausal women unaccustomed to vaginal penetration will place the smaller end of the Barbell just at the vaginal opening (inside the vestibule). As you begin to squeeze and release the PC muscle, observe the sensation. Penetrate your vagina very slowly going an inch at a time while pausing to grip and release the dildo or Barbell with your muscle. Once the Barbell is inserted, it stays in place leaving both hands free. Your veggie dildo will get pushed out as you squeeze the muscle, so hold it in place or just forget set it aside.

CLITORAL STIMULATION: With the Barbell in place, add clitoral stimulation first with your oiled finger. Release all expectations of what you "should" be feeling. Just observe what is happening without passing any judgments. Stay with manual as long as it feels good. When you desire more clitoral sensation, add a battery vibrator. Stay with this for as long as it feels good.

For women using an electric vibrator, begin with the switch on low. Its okay to experiment with high later on, but the low setting will allow you to take more time and enjoy all the pleasurable sensations. Keep a light touch. The whole point of selfloving is to train your body to tolerate higher levels of sexual pleasure that last longer than a few moments.

COMBINING BREATHING, PELVIC MOVEMENTS AND THE PC MUSCLE: As you rock your hips forward, squeeze your PC muscle and exhale through your mouth. As your pelvis drops back down inhale through your nose and release the PC muscle. Forward, exhale and squeeze the PC. Drop back down as you inhale and release the PC muscle. Continue doing this while breathing out loud. Listen to yourself breathing. While this seems a bit complicated at first, like any new dance step, once you've done it a few times your body will remember the moves. As you reach a higher level of sexual arousal your breathing will be similar to jogging or walking briskly. Eventually you can make sounds of pleasure on the out breath. Try the vowels sounds of Ah, Oh or say the word "yes." Let your jaw drop and have your mouth slightly open. Keep your eyes closed with your attention focused on the sensations in your genitals.

ORGASM: It's important to let go of all romantic notions of what you think an orgasm will be like. Instead keep an open mind and pay attention to the good feelings that are happening in your body. Be patient. A consistent problem for beginners is putting pressure on yourself to come. This is the exact opposite of experiencing pleasure. Sexual excitement does not go in a straight line to orgasm similar to many men's sexual response. You can get a sensation that feels great and then it will drift or go away completely. Nothing is wrong. Keep breathing while you tense and release your PC muscle. Find another rhythm with your clitoral stimulation and change your pelvic movements until you catch the next wave of pleasure.

Just in front of a climax your pelvic movements might become more urgent and breathing more rapid as your heart rate increases. Or you might slow down and get quiet. At that point trust your body until it has the orgasm. Once orgasm occurs, don't stop. Simply lighten up with clitoral stimulation by moving the vibrator above or off to one side. Keep breathing, moving your pelvis and pumping the pelvic floor muscles. After a few moments, the hypersensitivity will subside and for some women, her clitoris will be ready to go again. At that point you have the choice of building up to another orgasm or simply riding the aftershocks of pleasure from the orgasm you just had. Some women feel satisfied with one nice full orgasm. We are unique so one size does not fit all.

About The Magic Wand: This vibrator is sold as an electric body massager. Although there are many electric vibrators on the market now, the Wand is my personal favorite. This sturdy and reliable machine is great for relaxing and soothing sore muscles throughout the entire body. The therapeutic vibrations bring a new supply of blood to any area being massaged including the genitals. Once I discovered how great this vibrator was for sexual pleasure, I started buying them by the case to share with the women in my original Bodysex groups. Since the early seventies I have recommended the Magic Wand without being paid for my endorsement. I currently sell the Wand on my website in addition to Betty's Barbell, my vaginal exerciser, and a few other favorite sex toys along with my books and videos. When you use the Wand, I recommend using a layer of cushioning. At first, I used a soft washcloth layered. Today I just put a clean white sock on the head of the vibrator.

The Magic Wand vibrator only works on AC current so the company will not ship to countries with direct electrical current. However, there is a vibrator that works on batteries called the Mystic Wand. It’s like the Magic Wands little sister. She has five different settings and one has vibrations almost as strong as her Big Mama Magic Wand. Mystic is smaller, quieter and adorable. The low setting is good for beginners. Another good vibrator is the Eroscillator that also comes in both AC and DC current. These vibrators plus other sex toys are available from our sex shop.

A woman who has a history of little or no masturbation and is looking for her first orgasm in her mid-thirties or older, the Mystic or Magic Wand will provide steady stimulation for as long as she needs to awaken her slumbering clitoris. The strong consistent vibrations will make up for years of sensory deprivation. The Wand is a must for postmenopausal women who want to renew a fading libido or for women taking an anti-depressant. The electric vibrator is to women what Viagra is to men. The Wand is also marvelous for women interested in increasing the intensity of their orgasms, wanting to have several orgasms during a masturbation session and for women that want to experience orgasm during penetration sex with a partner. Get my book Orgasms for Two that has information on how to use a vibrator while having sex with your partner.

VARIATIONS ON EXPERIENCES WITH VIBRATORS: When you are new to vibrator sex, you may experience any number of responses. One client I observed had a full-body orgasm, but she claimed nothing had happened. Her expectations of an orgasm were so exaggerated she couldn't identify what was actually taking place in her body. Another woman had a small climax and didn't think it was real. In order for her orgasms to grow, she needed to acknowledge her small climaxes. A girlfriend told me that the first time she used a vibrator, she had the most intense orgasm of her life, but it was over before she knew what had happened. Another woman had to practice for a month before she broke through to her orgasm. We are all very different in how we respond to clitoral stimulation.

COMMON MISUSE OF THE VIBRATOR: Some women create pain instead of pleasure by bearing down with the vibrator, crushing their sweet little clits while demanding immediate results. Or they vibrate too long irritating their vulva. If you feel pain or a burning sensation, stop. You are doing something wrong. Instead of relying on pressure to increase the sensation, keep the vibrator moving around your clitoris with a light touch. A little pressure from time to time is okay, but bearing down will numb out the most athletic clits. Breathing fully, rocking your pelvis and squeezing the pelvic floor muscles will increase your genital sensation. Avoid bearing down harder with your vibrator.

The other problem is not spending enough time. Most women who come for a private session have never masturbated for more than five or ten minutes. In order to get the energy moving similar to getting your heart rate up, I often keep my client moving, breathing and vibrating for at least an hour, sometimes up to three hours. The common complaint from women is, "I seem to get right in front of an orgasm but I can't get over that edge." My answer is, "There is no edge." Just keep vibrating while trying something different; a new fantasy, a different rhythm, shifting the position of the vibrator, altering vaginal penetration., increase your pelvic floor muscle squeezing. Most important is don't stop, keep going.

SEXUAL FANTASY: One of the best ways to focus your mind on sexual pleasure is to engage your mind in a hot fantasy instead of running the grocery list. If you are new to fantasy you can start by imagining something sexual that you enjoyed and gradually embellish the details. Sexual fantasy is at the heart of the creative process that requires the freedom to imagine the unimaginable. Get rid of the mental censor inside your head. My fantasies have ranged from sugary romantic scenarios to thinking up elaborate set ups for bondage where I'm taken advantage of by cruel men. At first I worried about my rape and bondage fantasies, but these were the images that got me really hot. In real life I have never been put into bondage or raped. Once I understood that I was playing all the roles in my fantasies, it freed me to stop passing judgment. That alone freed my imagination to think about anything that turned me on.

DILDO USE: Once you have your orgasm pattern established, adding vaginal penetration with Betty's Barbell or differently sized dildos will intensify sexual sensations. When using my Barbell, first oil your toy and start with slow penetration. Once inside, you can leave the Barbell in place while you squeeze and release the PC muscle. The weight of the Barbell holds it inside the vagina. Or you can move it slowly in and out or do a short rapid motion while continuing clitoral stimulation. Angle the Barbell or any other dildo up toward the ceiling of your vagina and press into the urethral sponge (G-spot) and observe the sensation. Don't look for some special spot inside your vagina. It's a sensation.

Focus on your primary sex organ, the clitoris with its eight thousand nerve endings. The internal clitoris inside the body surrounds the first third of your vaginal barbell. Continue to work the PC muscle against the Barbell. Try a variety of different sized dildos. You might find a larger dildo that stretches your vagina feels good. If vaginal penetration is not that interesting for you or it doesn't feel good, then drop it and just stay with your clitoris.

GETTING EVERYTHING TOGETHER

Combining the five elements of clitoral stimulation, vaginal penetration, pelvic movements, PC muscle contractions and breathing out loud makes this style of masturbation the one that's most easily translated to partnersex. During intercourse, you or your partner can add the kind of clitoral contact you prefer with fingers, a battery vibrator or any electric vibrator including my favorite, the Magic Wand or the Mystic Wand.

If you've followed these instructions and STILL CAN'T ORGASM, I've put together a longer version that's an ebook: Learn to Orgasm in 4 Acts on Amazon.

Also, go to the Nav Bar and under Ask Dr. Betty, read the questions and my answers asked by other women. This will give you more ideas of skills you can try. I'm always working on gathering new facts to share. Be sure to read my information on the G spot. If a woman squirts naturally it's perfectly OK, but I advise beginners to stay focused on the clitoris which is our primary organ for sexual pleasure. Another fact is that squirting is not the same thing as having an orgasm so don't get caught up in all the PR surrounding this over-stated sexual response.

Happy orgasms!

If you need important reason. Your vulva is your clitoral glans, inner and outer labia and your vaginal opening. Your clitoris exists solely for pleasure. Women can enjoy multiple orgasms and limitless pleasure when they stimulate their "clitoral system".

Women have as much erectile tissue as men. We get internal erections and our clitoris is just the visible portion of our complex clitoral system. We have internal structures - the legs and the bulbs of the clitoris - a pleasure wishbone running through our labia and around our vaginal opening.

Our vagina is a canal. There are pleasurable parts but that varies with each woman. The best orgasm is the combination orgasm when we combine clitoral stimulation with vaginal penetration. The vagina is wonderful but serves two purposes: pleasure and birth. Our clitorises exist solely for pleasure.

Here are some pics of my vulva with some simple anatomical descriptions. Please feel free to use these images in presentations and your blogs as long as you clearly label D&R.com.
<img alt="My Vulva" data-entity-type="file" field--name-field-atom-rtf-with-summary field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item">
Over the years, one frequently asked question comes from women and a few men who are unable to incorporate their current method of masturbation into partnersex.

Many have carried the same pattern of childhood masturbation over into adulthood and it's now the only way they can get off. Some are stimulating their genitals with one or both hands pressed between legs that are tightly squeezed together while lying face down on their tummies- not conducive to sharing orgasms with another person. Others are humping folded blankets, wooden floors, riding the arm of an overstuffed chair or pressing against hard counter tops.

As kids, the idea was to come fast to avoid getting caught. If we were lying face down, mom, siblings or the baby sitter couldn't see what are naughty little hands were doing.

While Pressure and Tension orgasms are probably the most prevalent kind for a majority of people, they are limited in terms of bodily sensations- similar to a quick blip on the pleasure scale. The other problem is that they rarely translate into sharing orgasms with a partner. The solution is simple! It's time to upgrade your masturbation technique.

First let me emphasize, there are a gazillion ways to get off and there's no such thing as having a "wrong" kind of orgasm.

After years of observing my own orgasms plus all the women I've known personally and have worked with professionally, I've observed four basic categories: Pressure, Tension, Relaxation and the Combination that I call a "Rock and Roll Orgasm." This one combines elements of the first three. While breathing fully during a buildup, we are squeezing and releasing our muscles rhythmically with direct or indirect clitoral contact. Pressure or Tension orgasms are most often reached by holding our breath and gasping occasionally. Total relaxation orgasms or what I've also termed "Sleeping Beauty" are most rare. To remain totally relaxed while breathing deeply, someone else must do genital stimulation in a manner that is nearly perfect. Ha! If you find that person capture them quick!

While no two orgasms from self-stimulation are precisely the same, most women use some form of direct or indirect clitoral stimulation with or without penetration. The body responds with movement, no movement, along with varied breathing patterns from holding the breath to panting. Other women remain utterly silent while others make a variety of sounds. The mind can be paying attention to what the body is feeling, focused on sexual thoughts, or conjuring up a sex fantasy. Just as long as you're not planning a dinner menu or running the laundry list.

Pressure Orgasms: (No hands). One workshop woman said she pressed her clitoris against overstuffed furniture. Another pressed against the hard nose on her teddy bear. Some little girls squeeze their legs together to get those good feelings. Other's say wearing tight jeans got them off and more than a few were very fond of their bicycle seats. As a preteen, I was crazy about riding horses before I got interested in boys. Some women who grew up with a strong prohibition about touching themselves directly made a transition to stronger orgasms by letting water run on their clitoris from a bathtub faucet. I began rocking on a pillow pulled up tight between my legs until the "tickle" went away. At some point I just naturally segued over to my fingers and assumed everyone did the same. Not true.

Tension Orgasms: Direct genital rubbing combined with muscle tension gets most of us through puberty, into young adulthood, and for some, throughout the rest of their lives. Tension Orgasms rely on leg and buttock muscles being squeezed tight with the rest of the body held fairly rigid. While holding the breath, a fast motion is used on the clitoris or penis until orgasm explodes in a quick burst. These fast tension climaxes are silent and many of us grew up masturbating this way to avoid getting caught by our parents or siblings. These quick tension orgasms often carry over into many men ejaculating prematurely during partnersex.
A few women have orgasms with muscle tension only without any direct genital contact.

One woman climaxed by hanging from the top of a door to create tension in her entire body while squeezing her vaginal muscle tight. Another woman had orgasms from climbing a rope in gym class. In contrast to coming fast, a friend of mine developed tension orgasms without any clitoral contact into an art form. Now in her early fifties, she is in great shape with the isometric exercises she gets from straining against some form of erotic bondage by keeping her body rigid during elaborate scenes of suspension.

Most people claim to be too busy to spend any quality time enjoying sex. So it will come as no surprise when I say Tension Orgasms are the most common for the largest number of people. While there is no such thing as having a "wrong" kind of orgasm- some are definitely better than others. When a person spends more time building up sexual arousal by breathing, moving, and allowing the body to express a little joy with sounds of pleasure, it creates a more joyful and satisfying experience with orgasm. Fast sex is like fast food- it takes the edge off hunger but it's not all that nourishing.

Relaxation Orgasms: These are difficult to achieve alone because it's nearly impossible to be totally relaxed while doing some form of genital self-stimulation. My relaxed orgasms first happened in my teens with manual sex from a boyfriend's delicate touch. During long sessions of kissing and genital fondling, I was the classic Sleeping Beauty. To avoid exhibiting "animal-like" behavior, I kept releasing the build-up of sexual tension by consciously relaxing my muscles. This took concentration but I felt my reputation was at stake. At one point when I could hold back no longer, the orgasm would come and get me. As long as I did nothing to make this happen and he didn't put his penis inside my vagina, I was still considered a virgin.

The best way to experience Relaxation Orgasms is with a partner. A few teachers of Eastern sex practices have their students take turns giving and receiving manual genital sex with explicit verbal guidance telling one another exactly how to vary the stimulation. They are taught to slow down, relax the pelvic floor muscles, breathe deeply and allow their sexual energy to build gradually. Rajneesh, a Tantra teacher from India, called this a "valley orgasm"- sinking down into the sensation instead of building up as in a "peak orgasm," which is what I call a Tension Orgasm. Rajneesh believed that sex in the future would involve more fun, joy, friendship, and play than the serious affair it is now. I totally support this image. Both Rajneesh and Wilhelm Reich ended up in jail- an indication of how different ideas about sexual pleasure threatens insecure American men.

Combination Orgasms: These are my favorite so this is my bias. This style of orgasm uses tension and relaxation as well as some form of direct clitoral stimulation with either fingers or a vibrator along with vaginal penetration. The Combination Orgasm is what I ended up teaching in the masturbation workshops. Once I realized I could jump-start sexual arousal for women who had never had an orgasm by using the electric vibrator, I began teaching them how to harness all that power for pleasure. Even women who were already orgasmic with their hands could take their orgasms to the next level by masturbating much longer than the usual few minutes. The key to enjoying any electric vibrator is to manage the intensity of the vibrations. Mystic Wand with 5 different speeds which automatically controls the intensity. The idea is to build up slowly not to slam a strong vibe directly onto a cold clit- eek!

After getting in touch with the PC muscle by practicing Kegel exercises, begin slow penetration with a dildo while squeezing and releasing the pelvic floor muscle. Then add clitoral stimulation with a vibrator. While hips rock forward (inhale and flex the PC) and back (exhale and release the PC). The muscles are engaged similar to an athlete in motion.

Combining these five elements- clitoral stimulation, vaginal penetration, PC muscle contractions, pelvic thrusting and breathing out loud makes the combination orgasm the one that translates most easily into partnersex. During intercourse, the woman or her partner simply adds her preferred kind of clitoral contact. In my opinion, the best approach is when a woman controls her clitoral stimulation the same as a man does with the angle and speed of vaginal thrusting. Sharing mutual orgasms combines the best of both her and his worlds creating more harmony between the sexes.

<!-- END OUTPUT from So again I repeat: the clitoral body is the primary source of orgasm whether it's stimulated externally, internally, or both at the same time. I prefer both. Once a woman understands she can have both clitoral stimulation with vaginal penetration, it ends this discussion.

There is no distinction between "vaginal" or "clitoral" or "G spot" orgasms since all orgasms are centered in the clitoris. It doesn't matter if it's direct clitoral contact or indirect G spot stimulation. Or even the more illusive deep vaginal thrusting that stimulates the base of the spine, now called the "deep spot." That orgasm requires an 8 inch penis or a quality silicone dildo. All you guys with average 5 to 6 inch penises erect are SOL on that one.

Back in the seventies, Master and Johnson's research demonstrated that all orgasms were the result of some form of direct or indirect clitoral stimulation. Kinsey agreed before them as did many ancient cultures. Unfortunately many Americans remain influenced by Freud's ridiculous theory that vaginal orgasms are superior, an idea that took hold during the Victorian age of extreme sexual repression. It's kept alive today by organized religions and what some men prefer: a quick fuck similar to masturbating inside a vagina.

The "G spot" orgasm is also indirect clitoral stimulation. We know the urethral sponge that surrounds the urinary tract fills up with blood and becomes erect after being stimulated with pressure applied to the ceiling of the vagina. Or in some cases, the use of a strong vibrator on or near the clitoris also can result in ejaculation. Most women agree that "squirting" is not the same as having an orgasm, although I'm told it feels very nice especially if it accompanies orgasm.

At first, young and old women were asking me how they could learn to ejaculate. Recently, I've been asked how can I stop gushing during sex with my partner. After searching thousands of website that describe how to female ejaculate, no where could I find information on how to stop female ejaculation. Instead I was advised to get protective mattress covers and more towels are recommended. No where could I find information on stopping this response for those who find the clean up afterwards a drag.

"A vaginal orgasm" is also indirect clitoral stimulation considering the internal structures of the clitoris. The erectile tissue of the legs and bulbs fill up with blood and become erect during vaginal thrusting with an erect penis/dildo/fingers for up to thirty minutes or more. Also to consider is indirect clitoral stimulation when couples bodies press together. Many women discover that getting on top allows her to press her clitoris into her lovers body.

Following all this complicated physical information, we have to include the mental and emotional state of being "in love." Romantic Love has been described by some feminists and philosophers as "temporary insanity." Unfortunately, it's the most popular sexual fantasy for the largest number of girls and women all over the world: "Some day my Prince Charming will come."

What's left out of this conversation is the following information: A woman's erection takes twenty to thirty minutes of adequate clitoral stimulation for her entire vulva to become engorged. The operating word here is "adequate" and will vary from woman to woman.

The point being that few women are even turned on before they get fucked. Most are getting a few minutes of clumsy clit stim, a few licks from a dry tongue or harsh finger banging. The moment there's a small amount of lubrication, many lovers dive into the vagina going for a home run. No wonder sex therapists emphasize foreplay and no wonder faked orgasms far out number real ones. When we discover how few women are having orgasms during intercourse it's obvious to me that fucking is really foreplay for masturbation.

Unfortunately, intercourse rarely if ever lasts long enough to engage the internal clitoris. We forget that for every pre-orgasmic woman there's a premature ejaculating man. This is one of the primary reasons why men don't want to know what women want because it would require them to make an effort to learn "come control" which sounds like another job and he's already overworked.

The other tragedy is that most women don't understand their sexual bodies either due to the absence of childhood masturbation. This is a time when girls and boys get to discover their orgasmic patterns. Even today, women's sex information and education is based on the male model of sexual response: A penis ejaculating inside a vagina. This is also the hetero-centric, procreative model that's supported by organized religions, governments and even Mother Nature who wants to further the species. Some days it seems that women can't win for losing.

We now have the horrendous job of sexually educating a world that's under the influence of violence with militant religions and corporations intent on dominating the world. Still, some of us continue to hope that "Mankind" will give peace a chance. Otherwise women will have to take over before we can embrace the Pleasure Principal with Equal Rights and Orgasms for all.

<!-- END OUTPUT from href="http://dodsonandross.com/sexfeature/first-time-orgasm">First Time Orgasm, and Learn a New Orgasm: How to Upgrade Your Masturbation Technique

Basically, you're lying on your back with your legs bent hip distance apart...rock your pelvis forward toward your belly button and squeeze your pc muscle then relax your pc muscle as your roll your pelvis back to the ground. Breathe in while you rock your pelvis forward and squeeze your pc muscle - then exhale as you release your pc muscle and your pelvis back to the ground. It's a small, subtle movement.

Rock/Squeeze...Relax/Release...Repeat.

Then you add clitoral stimulation and vaginal penetration for total vulva happiness. Don't be disappointed if it takes some time to learn the steps. Trust me. It's worth it.

Here's the breakdown in Betty's own words:

THE PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLE: Consciously relax your vaginal muscles while taking several deep breaths. Then very slowly press your middle finger inside your vagina. Once inside, circle your finger feeling the contours of your vaginal barrel. Take a deep breath and relax all the surrounding muscles and focus primarily on the muscle that stops the flow of urine. Do not bear down.

Your feet are on the floor with your knees bent and your legs at a comfortable angle. Most women tend to hold their breath during sexual arousal so make sure you breathe.

PELVIC ROCKING: Avoid tensing up and holding your body rigid. Move your pelvis like Elvis. Roll your hips. Do a little dance lying down. Use all the movements that feel good. During your entire masturbation session, a gentle rocking motion can become perpetual motion.

If you have Betty's Barbell, penetration virgins or postmenopausal women unaccustomed to vaginal penetration will place the smaller ball of the Barbell just at the vaginal opening (inside the vestibule). As you begin to squeeze and release the PC muscle, observe the sensation. Penetrate your vagina very slowly going an inch at a time while pausing to grip and release the dildo or Barbell with your muscle. Once the Barbell is inserted, it stays in place leaving both hands free. Your veggie dildo will get pushed out as you squeeze the muscle, so hold it in place.

CLITORAL STIMULATION: With the Barbell in place, add clitoral stimulation first with your oiled finger. Release all expectations of what you "should" be feeling. Just observe what is happening without any judgments. Stay with manual as long as it feels good. When you desire more clitoral sensation, add a battery vibrator. Stay with this for as long as it feels good.

For women using an electric vibrator, begin with the switch on low. Its okay to experiment with high later on, but the low setting will allow you to take time and enjoy all your pleasurable sensations. Keep a light touch. The whole point of self-loving is to train your body to tolerate higher levels of sexual pleasure that last longer than a few moments.

I use Betty's Rock 'n Roll technique during masturbation and partner sex. You can't just lie there and expect orgasms to fall down from heaven. At first, it felt like it was too much to think about but eventually with enough practice it became second nature. I promise - if you use the rock 'n roll technique in your masturbation practice, you'll train your body to orgasm during partner sex. Just don't forget to do your own clitoral stimulation.

<!-- END OUTPUT from believe sexual repression begins the moment a parent or caregiver punishes a child’s natural curiosity for touching their own sex organs.

Society needs to understand that the health of each person’s sexlife rests upon childhood masturbation— the foundation upon which all of human sexuality is based. It’s very consistent that each client I see struggling with orgasms as an adult has no memory of masturbating in childhood or in their teens. The absence of this natural self-exploration interferes with the development of nerve pathways that carry positive sensations from our genitals to the pleasure center in the brain. This blocks or slows down the development of sexual release with orgasm.

Not as many boys get the same message of “Don’t touch your-self down there” as do girls. The male sex organ is more easily accessible so society tacitly agrees that a boy’s sexual interest is more natural or urgent due to the ejaculation of semen. However, all societies controlled by some form of organized religion demonize pleasure for its own sake, so boys suffer masturbation repression as well. The predominant acceptance for sexuality remains fixated on procreation within a monogamous heterosexual marriage— far too narrow an image. Therefore most of us are sinners in the eyes of the church which makes it much easier to control a large portion of the population by a few.

Female sexual conditioning is already in play when a concerned parent unknowingly sets up a sexual double standard when mothers want their sons to be sexual but fear their daughters might end up with an unwanted teen pregnancy with all that entails. Therefore, most girls grow up without any idea of where her sexual feelings come from except by accident like climbing a rope in gym class, clenching their legs together or rocking on the arm of an overstuffed chair. They become fixated on some weird form of indirect clitoral stimulation that rarely translates into partnersex. Meanwhile, boys learn to come quickly to avoid getting “caught in the act.” This leads to adult men ejaculating fast because they have not learned to sustain heightened sexual feelings. So for every pre-orgasmic woman there is a pre-mature ejaculating man.

Add to this all the jokes, disgust or moral condemnation shown toward masturbation and we have a recipe for preventing people from discovering the joys of orgasmic sex. Those who do masturbate often struggle with guilt and self-loathing. Once we include Dr. Freud’s theory of “mature vaginal orgasms” for women and more recently the much debated, yet fashionable G spot, we have a population that is very sexually confused. Men believe they must “give” a woman her orgasm to prove they’re good lovers while women have been conditioned to protect the male ego. Many women end up faking an orgasm to avoid hurting a lovers feelings and thus sacrificing their own pleasure. As if that isn’t bad enough, we misname the female genitals by reducing all the parts down to a “vagina” which only refers to the birth canal. When was the last time you saw the word clitoris in print or heard it said on television?

Sex educators know this: When we go on television, we are told we can say “G” spot but refer to the clitoris as the “C” spot. When I was interviewed by Bill O’Reilly in 2002, I was told that I couldn’t say “Orgasms for Two” the title of my book, so I had to use the sub title, “The Joy of Partnersex.” Bill said it was because his was a “family show.” I took that to mean families didn’t have any orgasms which is probably closer to the truth.

As long as church and state continues to limit sex to procreation, we’ll have a severely repressed society. Nearly all men can ejaculate quickly but far too many women are not orgasmic. These women suffer from guilt and self-loathing and blame themselves for being “frigid” or today it’s called “sexually dysfunctional.” Both women and men end up comparing themselves to porn stars, which has been society’s primary form of sex education. Naturally this causes more insecurity and disention in relationships often leading to divorce and the break-up of families. But a sexually controlled society is much easier to manipulate by a few authoritarian dictators, priests, or other so-called leaders.

We now have a chance to change the course of history with the emerging Global Revolution. This time we must complete the sexual revolution that began in the sixties by including orgasmic pleasure in the teaching of human sexuality.

“Help me Dr. Betty. I’ve never had an orgasm.” I have lost track of how many times I‘ve answered this very same question: I want to share this near perfect example from Rebecca. Her story represents many young girls’ struggle with the inability to discover and enjoy the experience of orgasm. In a society where sex is everywhere we turn, this can be emotionally very painful. She feels broken and sexually inadequate.

Rebecca’s first question: Friday, Jun 17, 2011

“I’m almost twenty years old, and I’ve never had an orgasm. I have no problem with getting aroused. I think about sex a lot, I want sex a lot, and I fantasize about sex regularly. However, touching my vulva, being touched or having intercourse doesn’t seem to work right for me. I love sex – I love the idea of a man being inside me, I love touching a man and pleasuring him. I just don’t seem to get the physical pleasure other girls do. Often, sex is very painful for me.

The same goes for oral or manual stimulation. It feels horrible half of the time; I can’t seem to stand my clitoris being touched. So oral sex feels like a combination of very little pleasure and absolute pain. I love going down on men, and honestly, that is what I prefer since there is no expectation and I can focus on him being turned on. Besides, I am sick of explaining I don’t come so he doesn’t feel badly if he doesn’t give me an orgasm. I would fake one for him, but I have no idea how.

The only times I would feel any pleasure are during dry humping when I was on top (oddly, it feels better with clothes on). Or when on the bed, I would lie on my stomach and he would lie on top of me while entering from behind. I think it was because the pleasure was less centered, more spread out, but not consistent. Just occasionally he would hit the right spot for a few moments, and suddenly I would feel a slight build up, then he would always speed up because I was reacting positively. But I’d loose the right spot after a few seconds anyway so he gets a release and I get to lie there still feeling turned on, and ashamed.

My ex would tell me, “It will happen someday.” But if I can’t maintain pleasure for more than a few moments very occasionally, how can I possibly expect a build-up to orgasm? Each time he would try to encourage me by telling me “To come” and I would just get depressed. It is not going to happen at this rate, and if I tell someone the truth about how it sometimes hurts, no one will want to be with me.

I know masturbation is the key here, but without having a man around, I do not feel turned on. I feel stupid and nervous, and I will lie there for ages until it gets depressing and I just can’t bear it anymore. I’ve tried vaginal stimulation, clitoral stimulation, that shower head technique... it feels numb or horribly painful, and I just don’t know how to get aroused by myself. No gynecologist has told me there is anything physically wrong, so I’m at a loss. I’m sick of feeling like a failure. I’m sick of feeling frustrated and still aroused after sex, and I’m sick of having no idea what everyone else is enjoying.

I know orgasm is not the end-all-be-all of sex. I still enjoy having sex, so I will keep having it. But since I’m feeling so frustrated, it makes finding a partner very difficult. I didn’t even have oppressive parents. They have been very open and supporting in every way, so what’s wrong with me? I just want to know what an orgasm is, to feel it at least once in my life. I want to know what I’m missing. I want sex to be what it’s supposed to be. The only other aspect that might come into the picture was being touched inappropriately by a boy at age 16, but I was having trouble with masturbation long before that. I have also taken anti-depressants from age 14 to 18, but I took Welbutrin for a while after, which is supposed to fix the sexual dysfunction they cause, and I am no longer depressed. Other than that, I have an anxiety disorder... But even with my scheduled anxiety drugs, I’m not able to function any better, so I’m still at a loss. I apologize for the length of this, but I’ve just never really been open about sex like this before. Thank you for your time. I love your website. It’s really incredible what you’re doing!”

My response:

Dear Rebecca,

What you describe is a common pattern for legions of young women today. In my opinion, it was insane to put a 14 year old girl on an anti-depressant drug. It is a known fact that these drugs interfere with a person's sexual build-up to orgasm. The same goes for Welbutrin. Google Welbutrin side effects and read the information available. Today it is all too easy to take a child to a doctor and get a quick fix with some drug.

You sound like a smart young woman so I recommend you make a 350 degree turn around and embrace alternative healing modalities. Change your diet and use yoga and meditation for your anxiety. We all have some degree of feeling anxious; its part of the human condition. Burn off some of your pent up sex frustration by taking up a sport where you can sweat. Work out in a gym, swim lengths in a pool (my favorite). For now, don’t focus so much on wanting an orgasm with a partner. Your young man knows even less than you do about female sexuality. You need to practice masturbation alone by exploring your vulva and to focus on stimulating your clitoris.

Stop being such a drama queen by claiming that clitoral stimulation "either feels numb or horribly painful." Unless you are beating up on your clit with dry fingers or some hard objects, “horribly painful” is a bit of an exaggeration. Maybe “discomfort” or “intense” would be better terms. In addition, the fact that you cannot focus on yourself without a "man around" makes you a victim. It’s highly unlikely that any man will be able to help you have an orgasm unless you can go there first. I know that many boys chant, "Come, come, come!" But that just creates more pressure on girls to perform and it’s a sure way to turn us off. While these young men mean well, they are using the male model of sexual response that doesn’t work for us. So it’s back to basics.

Go to How to Orgasm and follow my step-by-step process. Your clitoris needs to be awakened by your own gentle touch. Begin with an over-all vulva massage using some organic oil like coconut. You have a lot to overcome and learn so do not expect instant success. Sex is like any art form; first, the basics are learned and then practiced like a dancer working out at the exercise bar in front of mirrors. All the information you need is on the website. Let me know when you succeed. I am rooting for you.

Rebecca’s second response follows:

“I wanted to thank you for what you wrote to me a few months back. You were right. My clitoris had not been awakened. That wording was perfect, and it really made me think. I never would have imagined that the extreme sensitivity I felt could really be solved just by touching myself regularly! You were right, though. You were so, so right. It is just like trying to jump into cold water: you have to start by wading in the shallow end or it will be unpleasant. So finally, I worked through it, and I had my first orgasm!

I read your article on How to Orgasm. I spent time. I went slowly. I focused on what felt good rather than what I thought I was supposed to feel. I learned what worked for me and what did not. I decided to masturbate at least a couple times a week. Then I tried sex with more than one person. I had sex where I was in control and overall, I have loosened up. It was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

I do not have an orgasm every time I masturbate, and I’ve only managed once with partnersex (oral and manual), but now I know it will take time. I am not expecting an orgasm from vaginal penetration. Actually, I was finally able to tell a partner to stop focusing on my vagina and focus on my clitoris instead! Even after he said other girls can come vaginally, I did not feel guilty. I am finally focusing on me, rather than focusing on what others think. I feel so much more confident. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you for messaging me back. Thank you for rooting for me, and for other girls out there dealing with this. Just, thank you so much.”

This first category of problems for pre-orgasmic girls stems from lack of masturbation. The second category is having small orgasms but they are unable to identify them due to their expectations of what they “think” an orgasm will be like. Their ideas about orgasm are either based on watching porn, which is entertainment for men, or scenes from movies where women seem to orgasm effortlessly or noisily; once again for the sake of entertaining an audience.

“Dear Dr. Betty.

I'm 25, and until last night I'd believed I'd never really had an orgasm, except for possibly one time shortly after I started masturbating around the age of 12. I've masturbated almost religiously since then, often several times a day, with breaks occasionally where I just get too discouraged to try anymore and quit for a few months.

So Last night I read through the entire section on not being able to orgasm, and the stories of many women were eerily similar to mine. I feel something building and I always feel just on the verge of coming, like I'm teetering on the edge of a cliff. But it feels too good, or too intense, and then all of a sudden I'm empty. Arousal leaves me and I don't want to be touched. This leaves me feeling unsatisfied and incomplete, and so very frustrated. Every time your response to these women, women like me, was the same: “THAT'S an orgasm.” Since it doesn't feel like a release, I didn't think it was. Those feelings are so intense, and seem to be building towards something downright explosive, so the fizzle I got instead is, well, anti-climatic.

Because of your beautiful mission to educate us about our own bodies, I've come to the startlingly simple truth: For 13 years I've just been asking the wrong question. Instead of 'why can't I orgasm? What's wrong with me?' I should have been asking, 'What can I do to improve my orgasms?’ It never occurred to me to ask, because to improve I would need to have one to start with. Last night when I masturbated, I really focused on the sensations, thinking about it from the standpoint that I orgasm every time I masturbate. And I realized you were right - it does feel like a release, just a quiet, gentle one. My inner muscles don't contract or convulse, but now I know they don't have to.

So today, I decided to try to keep going after my clit stopped being so sensitive. I slowly built up and ended up having five of my little orgasms. Instead of feeling frustrated I felt relaxed and sleepy and content. There was no more pressure on myself. Now, instead of giving up after what I thought was no orgasm, I'm going to enjoy myself, and see if I can start building up to more intense orgasms. Now that I know the right question to ask, I can experiment with my orgasms (I'm still in disbelief that I can put those two words together!) Not giving up after one already helps!

So once again, thank you so much. It seems now like such a simple thing, but I felt broken and ashamed to admit to partners I wouldn't be able to orgasm with them. Now I'm excited by the prospect of fun mornings (afternoons, and evenings...) exploring a part of myself I never realized existed. I feel like Cinderella finally getting to go to the ball. So keep doing what you're doing. The women of this world need you.”
The First Two Problems: No masturbation followed by exaggerated idea of orgasm.

1. No masturbation: The big problem for these young girls who have never masturbated is that they have no idea how their sex organ functions. Learning how to orgasm during partnersex is very unlikely unless the man involved has a soft touch and is willing to spend a lot of time gently stimulating her clitoris with moistened fingers. Or he is gifted in performing oral sex and has the patience to keep going for thirty minutes or more. Even if he succeeds, she is then totally dependent on him for all of her sexual pleasure. While that might stroke his ego in the beginning, it will soon seem like a job without pay.

2. Exaggerated image of orgasm: girls who leave it up to their boyfriends to help them have an orgasm become the classic image of the blind leading the blind. He knows even less than she does because his sex organ functions totally differently from hers. If he’s circumcised and unfortunately most boys are, he relies on rapid friction to order to ejaculate. Boys with foreskins are gentler with a self-lubricating sex organ. It’s clear to many that the basic idea behind this barbaric practice is to prevent boys from masturbating.

The first step begins toward sexual healing is looking at your vulva in a mirror that stands alone to free both of your hands. None of this one-handed exploration will work. Next is a good light. Begin with a vulva massage using organic massage oil and slowly progress to manual stimulation of your clitoris. After five or so minutes, use your vibrator on low and keep it near the clitoris but not on it at first. Some women start above the clitoris or use the vibrator on the outer labia to soften the vibes. (Today I use a sock on my Magic Wand). As you feel sexual excitement building, keep moving the vibrator. One consistent mistake I have observed is to bear down with your vibrator to increase sensation. That never works. It will just numb out the entire area.

Once you have your first orgasm, back off and let those 8,000 nerve endings in your clitoris calm down. Then continue stimulation above or below Ms. Clitty while rocking your pelvis and breathing. This is when many of us can experience lovely after-shocks of pleasure as the sex energy continues to course through our bodies. Some women like to go on and have another orgasm while others are content with just one. Many have discovered that as long as the stimulation is to their liking, they can continue to have several more orgasms until physically tired. In my experience, each orgasm has its own build-up with varying lengths of time in-between. Sexual response is very personal. No one style fits all.

We need to explore our bodies with an open mind, without any fixed agenda or ideas of what an orgasm will feel like. We now have two generations of youth who have grown up with the abstinence only model as their primary source of sex information. Porn is entertainment for men and rarely if ever incorporates women’s sexual needs. Most important for all of us to realize is women function quite differently than men— we cannot expect orgasmic results in 5 or even 10 minutes. Yet this timing is adequate for most men.

Go to the Navigation Bar and click on “Ask Dr. Betty.” Read other women’s questions which will help you to form your own. When we lack sex information and have a minimum of experience, we don’t know enough to even form the right question. But once you have the information to help you explore your body more expertly, you’ll discover new physical sensations and feelings. In no time at all you will be an orgasmic woman well on her way to enjoying a happy sex life.

Just remember, sex is like any other skill: it must be learned and then practiced. My recommendation is to practice regularly as though you were training for the Sexual Olympics.

<!-- END OUTPUT from hoping to meet and discuss how we could collaborate. Although Anne was suspicious of me over the phone, once she was sure of my feminist credentials, she set up an appointment. During our visit, she explained that after receiving so much hate mail and a death threat as a result of her article, she was going to disappear. She had just begun a new relationship with a man she loved and didn't want to jeopardize their future with feminist politics. I picked up where she left off to carry the clitoral banner. I'm thrilled to be republishing Anne's piece here:

The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm
by Anne Koedt

Whenever female orgasm and frigidity are discussed, a false distinction is made between the vaginal and the clitoral orgasm. Frigidity has generally been defined by men as the failure of women to have vaginal orgasms. Actually the vagina is not a highly sensitive area and is not constructed to achieve orgasm. It is the clitoris which is the center of sexual sensitivity and which is the female equivalent of the penis.

I think this explains a great many things: First of all, the fact that the so-called frigidity rate among women is phenomenally high. Rather than tracing female frigidity to the false assumptions about female anatomy, our "experts" have declared frigidity a psychological problem of women. Those women who complained about it were recommended psychiatrists, so that they might discover their "problem" -diagnosed generally as a failure to adjust to their role as women.

The facts of female anatomy and sexual response tell a different story. Although there are many areas for sexual arousal, there is only one area for sexual climax; that area is the clitoris. All orgasms are extensions of sensation from this area. Since the clitoris is not necessarily stimulated sufficiently in the conventional sexual positions, we are left "frigid."

Aside from physical stimulation, which is the common cause of orgasm for most people, there is also stimulation through primarily mental processes. Some women, for example, may achieve orgasm through sexual fantasies, or through fetishes. However, while the stimulation may be psychological, the orgasm manifests itself physically. Thus, while the cause is psychological, the effect is still physical, and the orgasm necessarily takes place in the sexual organ equipped for sexual climax, the clitoris. The orgasm experience may also differ in degree of intensity - some more localized, and some more diffuse and sensitive. But they are all clitoral orgasms.

All this leads to some interesting questions about conventional sex and our role in it. Men have orgasms essentially by friction with the vagina, not the clitoral area, which is external and not able to cause friction the way penetration does. Women have thus been defined sexually in terms of what pleases men; our own biology has not been properly analyzed. Instead, we are fed the myth of the liberated woman and her vaginal orgasm - an orgasm which in fact does not exist.

What we must do is redefine our sexuality. We must discard the "normal" concepts of sex and create new guidelines which take into account mutual sexual enjoyment. While the idea of mutual enjoyment is liberally applauded in marriage manuals, it is not followed to its logical conclusion. We must begin to demand that if certain sexual positions now defined as "standard" are not mutually conducive to orgasm, they no longer be defined as standard. New techniques must be used or devised which transform this particular aspect of our current sexual exploitation.

Freud - Father of the Vaginal Orgasm: Freud contended that the clitoral orgasm was adolescent, and that upon puberty, when women began having intercourse with men, women should transfer the center of orgasm to the vagina. The vagina, it was assumed, was able to produce a parallel, but more mature, orgasm than the clitoris. Much work was done to elaborate on this theory, but little was done to challenge the basic assumptions.

To fully appreciate this incredible invention, perhaps Freud's general attitude about women should first be recalled. Mary Ellman, in Thinking About Women, summed it up this way: Everything in Freud's patronizing and fearful attitude toward women follows from their lack of a penis, but it is only in his essay "The Psychology of Women" that Freud makes explicit... the deprecations of women which are implicit in his work. He then prescribes for them the abandonment of the life of the mind, which will interfere with their sexual function. When the psycho-analyzed patient is male, the analyst sets himself the task of developing the man's capacities; but with women patients, the job is to resign them to the limits of their sexuality. As Mr. Rieff puts it, "For Freud, analysis cannot encourage in women new energies for success and achievement, but only teach them the lesson of rational resignation."

It was Freud's feelings about women's secondary and inferior relationship to men that formed the basis for his theories on female sexuality. Once having laid down the law about the nature of our sexuality, Freud not so strangely discovered a tremendous problem of frigidity in women. His recommended cure for a woman who was frigid was psychiatric care. She was suffering from failure to mentally adjust to her "natural" role as a woman. Frank S. Caprio, a contemporary follower of these ideas, states: "...whenever a woman is incapable of achieving an orgasm via coitus, provided the husband is an adequate partner, and prefers clitoral stimulation to any other form of sexual activity, she can be regarded as suffering from frigidity and requires psychiatric assistance." (The Sexually Adequate Female, p.64.)

The explanation given was that women were envious of men - renunciation of womanhood. Thus it was diagnosed as an anti-male phenomenon. It is important to emphasize that Freud did not base his theory upon a study of woman's anatomy, but rather upon his assumptions of woman as an inferior appendage to man, and her consequent social and psychological role. In their attempts to deal with the ensuing problem of mass frigidity, Freudians embarked on elaborate mental gymnastics. Marie Bonaparte, in Female Sexuality, goes so far as to suggest surgery to help women back on their rightful path. Having discovered a strange connection between the non-frigid woman and the location of the clitoris near the vagina,

"It then occurred to me that where, in certain women, this gap was excessive, and clitoral fixation obdurate, a clitoral-vaginal reconciliation might be effected by surgical means, which would then benefit the normal erotic function. Professor Halban, of Vienna, as much a biologist as surgeon, became interested in the problem and worked out a simple operative technique. In this, the suspensory ligament of the clitoris was severed and the clitoris secured to the underlying structures, thus fixing it in a lower position, with eventual reduction of the labia minora. (p.148.)

But the severest damage was not in the area of surgery, where Freudians ran around absurdly trying to change female anatomy to fit their basic assumptions. The worst damage was done to the mental health of women, who either suffered silently with self-blame or flocked to psychiatrists looking desperately for the hidden and terrible repression that had kept from them their vaginal destiny.

Lack of Evidence: One may perhaps at first claim that these are unknown and unexplored areas, but upon closer examination this is certainly not true today, nor was it true even in the past. For example, men have known that women suffered from frigidity often during intercourse. So the problem was there. Also, there is much specific evidence. Men knew that the clitoris was and is the essential organ for masturbation, whether in children or adult women. So obviously women made it clear where they thought their sexuality was located. Men also seem suspiciously aware of the clitoral powers during "foreplay," when they want to arouse women and produce the necessary lubrication for penetration. Foreplay is a concept created for male purposes, but works to the disadvantage of many women, since as soon as the woman is aroused the man changes to vaginal stimulation, leaving her both aroused and unsatisfied. It has also been known that women need no anesthesia inside the vagina during surgery, thus pointing to the fact that the vagina is in fact not a highly sensitive area.

Today, with extensive knowledge of anatomy, with Kelly, Kinsey, and Masters and Johnson, to mention just a few sources, there is no ignorance on the subject. There are, however, social reasons why this knowledge has not been popularized. We are living in a male society which has not sought change in women's role.

Anatomical Evidence: Rather than starting with what women ought to feel, it would seem logical to start out with the anatomical facts regarding the clitoris and vagina. The Clitoris is a small equivalent of the penis, except for the fact that the urethra does not go through it as in the man's penis. Its erection is similar to the male erection, and the head of the clitoris has the same type of structure and function as the head of the penis. C. Lombard Kelly, in Sexual Feeling in Married Men and Women, says: "The head of the clitoris is also composed of erectile tissue, and it possesses a very sensitive epithelium or surface covering, supplied with special nerve endings called genital corpuscles, which are peculiarly adapted for sensory stimulation that under proper mental conditions terminates in the sexual orgasm. No other part of the female generative tract has such corpuscles." (Pocketbooks; p.35.) The clitoris has no other function than that of sexual pleasure.

The Vagina - Its functions are related to, the reproductive function. Principally, 1) menstruation, 2) receive penis, 3) hold semen, and 4) birth passage. The interior of the vagina, which according to the defenders of the vaginally caused orgasm is the center and producer of the orgasm, is: Like nearly all other internal body structures, poorly supplied with end organs of touch. The internal entodermal origin of the lining of the vagina makes it similar in this respect to the rectum and other parts of the digestive tract. (Kinsey, Sexual Behavior in the Human Female, p.580.)

The degree of insensitivity inside the vagina is so high that "Among the women who were tested in our gynecologic sample, less than 14% were at all conscious that they had been touched." (Kinsey, p. 580.)

Even the importance of the vagina as an erotic center (as opposed to an orgasmic center) has been found to be minor. Other Areas - Labia minora and the vestibule of the vagina. These two sensitive areas may trigger off a clitoral orgasm. Because they can be effectively stimulated during "normal" coitus, though infrequently, this kind of stimulation is incorrectly thought to be vaginal orgasm. However, it is important to distinguish between areas which can stimulate the clitoris, incapable of producing the orgasm themselves, and the clitoris: " Regardless of what means of excitation is used to bring the individual to the state of sexual climax, the sensation is perceived by the genital corpuscles and is localized where they are situated: in the head of the clitoris or penis." (Kelly, p.49.)

Psychologically Stimulated Orgasm: Aside from the above mentioned direct and indirect stimulation of the clitoris, there is a third way an orgasm may be triggered. This is through mental (cortical) stimulation, where the imagination stimulates the brain, which in turn stimulates the genital corpuscles of the glans to set off an orgasm.

Women Who Say They Have Vaginal Orgasms: Confusion - Because of the lack of knowledge of their own anatomy, some women accept the idea that an orgasm felt during "normal" intercourse was vaginally caused. This confusion is caused by a combination of two factors. One, failing to locate the center of the orgasm, and two, by a desire to fit her experience to the male-defined idea of sexual normalcy. Considering that women know little about their anatomy, it is easy to be confused.

Deception: The vast majority of women who pretend vaginal orgasm to their men are faking it to "get the job." In a new bestselling Danish book, I Accuse, Mette Ejlersen specifically deals with this common problem, which she calls the "sex comedy." This comedy has many causes. First of all, the man brings a great deal of pressure to bear on the woman, because he considers his ability as a lover at stake. So as not to offend his ego, the woman will comply with the prescribed role and go through simulated ecstasy. In some of the other Danish women mentioned, women who were left frigid were turned off to sex, and pretended vaginal orgasm to hurry up the sex act. Others admitted that they had faked vaginal orgasm to catch a man. In one case, the woman pretended vaginal orgasm to get him to leave his first wife, who admitted being vaginally frigid. Later she was forced to continue the deception, since obviously she couldn't tell him to stimulate her clitorally.

Many more women were simply afraid to establish their right to equal enjoyment, seeing the sexual act as being primarily for the man's benefit, and any pleasure that the woman got as an added extra. Other women, with just enough ego to reject the man's idea that they needed psychiatric care, refused to admit their frigidity. They wouldn't accept self-blame, but they didn't know how to solve the problem, not knowing the physiological facts about themselves. So they were left in a peculiar limbo.

Again, perhaps one of the most infuriating and damaging results of this whole charade has been that women who were perfectly healthy sexually were taught that they were not. So in addition to being sexually deprived, these women were told to blame themselves when they deserved no blame. Looking for a cure to a problem that has none can lead a woman on an endless path of self-hatred and insecurity. For she is told by her analyst that not even in her one role allowed in a male society - the role of a woman - is she successful. She is put on the defensive, with phony data as evidence that she'd better try to be even more feminine, think more feminine, and reject her envy of men. That is, shuffle even harder, baby.

Why Men Maintain the Myth:

# 1. Sexual Penetration Is Preferred: The best physical stimulant for the penis is the woman's vagina. It supplies the necessary friction and lubrication. From a strictly technical point of view this position offers the best physical conditions, even though the man may try other positions for variation.

# 2. The Invisible Woman: One of the elements of male chauvinism is the refusal or inability to see women as total, separate human beings. Rather, men have chosen to define women only in terms of how they benefited men's lives. Sexually, a woman was not seen as an individual wanting to share equally in the sexual act, any more than she was seen as a person with independent desires when she did anything else in society. Thus, it was easy to make up what was convenient about women; for on top of that, society has been a function of male interests, and women were not organized to form even a vocal opposition to the male experts.

# 3. The Penis as Epitome of Masculinity: Men define their lives primarily in terms of masculinity. It is a universal form of ego-boosting. That is, in every society, however homogeneous (i.e., with the absence of racial, ethnic, or major economic differences) there is always a group, women, to oppress.

The essence of male chauvinism is in the psychological superiority men exercise over women. This kind of superior - inferior definition of self, rather than positive definition based upon one's own achievements and development, has of course chained victim and oppressor both. But by far the most brutalized of the two is the victim.

An analogy is racism, where the white racist compensates for his feelings of unworthiness by creating an image of the black man (it is primarily a male struggle) as biologically inferior to him. Because of his position in a white male power structure, the white man can socially enforce this mythical division.

To the extent that men try to rationalize and justify male superiority through physical differentiation, masculinity may be symbolized by being the most muscular, the most hairy; having the deepest voice, and the biggest penis. Women, on the other hand, are approved of (i.e., called feminine) if they are weak, petite, shave their legs, and have high soft voices.

Since the clitoris is almost identical to the penis, one finds a great deal of evidence of men in various societies trying to either ignore the clitoris and emphasize the vagina (as did Freud), or, as in some places in the Middle East, actually performing clitoraldectomy, Freud saw this ancient and still practiced custom as a way of further "feminizing" the female by removing this cardinal vestige of her masculinity. It should be noted also that a big clitoris is considered ugly and masculine. Some cultures engage in the practice of pouring a chemical on the clitoris to make it shrivel up into "proper" size.
It seems clear to me that men in fact fear the clitoris as a threat to masculinity.

# 4. Sexually Expendable Male: Men fear that they will become sexually expendable if the clitoris is substituted for the vagina as the center of pleasure for women. Actually this has a great deal of validity if one considers only the anatomy. The position of the penis inside the vagina, while perfect for reproduction does not necessarily stimulate an orgasm in women because the clitoris is located externally and higher up. Women must rely upon indirect stimulation in the "normal" position.

Lesbian sexuality could make an excellent case, based upon anatomical data, for the irrelevancy of the male organ. Albert Ellis says something to the effect that a man without a penis can make a woman an excellent lover.

Considering that the vagina is very desirable from a man's point of view, purely on physical grounds, one begins to see the dilemma for men. And it forces us as well to discard many "physical" arguments explaining why women go to bed with men. What is left, it seems to me, are primarily psychological reasons why women select men at the exclusion of women as sexual partners.

# 5. Control of Women: One reason given to explain the Mid-eastern practice of clitoraldectomy is that it will keep the women from straying. By removing the sexual organ capable of orgasm, it must be assumed that her sexual drive will diminish. Considering how men look upon their women as property, particularly in very backward nations, we should begin to consider a great deal more why it is not in men's interest to have women totally free sexually. The double standard, as practiced for example in Latin America, is set up to keep the woman as total property of the husband, while he is free to have affairs as he wishes.

# 6. Lesbianism and Bisexuality: Aside from the strictly anatomical reasons why women might equally seek other women as lovers, there is a fear on men's part that women will seek the company of other women on a full, human basis. The recognition of clitoral orgasm as fact would threaten the heterosexual institution. For it would indicate that sexual pleasure was obtainable from either men or women, thus making heterosexuality not an absolute, but an option. It would open up the whole question of human sexual relationships beyond the confines of the present male-female role system.

Betty responds further: In my 1974 book Liberating Masturbation: a Meditation on Selflove that I had to self-publish as no one else would, my statement on female frigidity is in the chapter titled: "Becoming Cunt Positive." I stated the following:

"Masturbation finally puts an end to the concept of frigidity. If a woman can stimulate her clitoris to orgasm she is orgasmic and sexually healthy. "Frigid" is a man's word for a woman who cannot have an orgasm in the missionary position in five minutes with the kind of stimulation that's only good for him."

Looking back over our feminist sex history, it is clear how women have been sidetracked by books like "Coital Alignment" for vaginal orgasms. Or Helen Kaplan who is revered by sex therapists and whose book I illustrated. I pleaded with her to include a drawing of a woman stimulating her own clitoris during intercourse as that was how I was having orgasms at the time. The illustration made it into her book, but she added the following caption: "In this version the woman stimulates herself to a point just prior to orgasm, and then the couple commences thrusting vigorously, thereby bringing her to climax." The penis reigned supreme once again.

Just as seventies feminists were reinstating the clitoris, the eighties introduced the G-spot orgasm which had everyone diving back inside the vagina. These orgasms were triggered by pressure on the ceiling of the vagina which I originally described as the "back side of the clitoris." Following that there were New Age climaxes such as "Breath Orgasms" and "Energy Orgasms." None of these required any clitoral or vaginal contact at all. We now have the C-spot orgasm (cervical pressure) and the D-spot orgasm from the cul-de-sac of the vagina, and the A-spot orgasm (ceiling of the vagina about an inch or more behind the G-spot). These mysterious vaginal spots all respond to pressure as society desperately tries to sustain the myth of the vaginal orgasm.

No one seems to notice that these "spots" are best dealt with using fingers. In other words, a guy no longer needs to get and keep an erection to give his woman a vaginal orgasm. Oh really? One of my speculations is that the birth canal is where we all came from so many men (as well as some women) simply wanted to get back inside Mommy. Meanwhile the clitoris continues to be ignored, devalued and made suspect by both men and brain washed women who want to appear sexy and feminine while they expertly fake passion during intercourse, especially with a hard fuck that's now seen as the height of masculine desire thanks to all the online porn.

I've lived through all of this vaginal madness and I clearly remember those few times in my youth when I could come from intercourse alone. Glory, hallelujah, I was a mature woman at last! The fact that I was getting indirect clit stim as he played at the opening of my vagina with his uncircumcised dick wasn't factored in. At the moment I was really turned on, I'd ask permission to get on top. Then I hunkered down and fucked him until I came. Of course we did sex the same way every time or it wouldn't work.

At the age of 35 and recently divorced, Grant Taylor entered my life. He had read every book available on sex. He healed my imagined genital deformity. I believed my dangling inner lips had been stretched by excessive childhood masturbation. He also added delicate clitoral stimulation during intercourse with his moistened fingers. After the sexual part of our affair ended, he spent the rest of his life aiding and supporting my efforts to speak out about female sexuality, masturbation and the clitoris as a woman's primary sex organ. I'll always be grateful he entered my life. Our 43 year collaboration has become even more precious with his absence these past two years. Some days I can mentally hear him criticizing a sentence I've written or challenging a concept. He would love the website we have today that he set up for me in 1998, especially my Genital Art Gallery. Grant was a "Connoisseur of Cunts" and a clit hound. I gladly carry on his tradition.

In Anne Koedt's own words, "...perhaps one of the most infuriating and damaging results of this whole charade has been that women who were perfectly healthy sexually were taught that they were not. So in addition to being sexually deprived, these women were told to blame themselves when they deserved no blame. Looking for a cure to a problem that has none can lead a woman on an endless path of self-hatred and insecurity."

In all the forty-some years I've taught women about orgasm, the same problems exist now as then. Childhood masturbation was punished or inhibited. The same as me forty years ago, women don't like their genitals and they don't understand their own sexual anatomy. Many have never seen their clitoris and they can't find their G-spots and "squirt" to please a lover. They continue to fear vibrator addiction and long to come from a lover's touch. Or better yet, they want to learn how to come during intercourse.

When women claim the Clitoris as our rightful sex organ of pleasure, we can end the war between the sexes. Orgasmic women will heal us from all the lies we've been told. Once liberated, people can end America's wars of aggression as our number one form of business.
