Limiting her feminine hygiene choices won't keep her chaste.

Menstruation & Mother Shaming

Why are we all so quick to condemn mothers? It seems a bit of a leap from dislike or distrust of menstrual cups, to sexual repression and wanting to keep her daughter "chaste". There is at least as much touching of genitals using tampons as a menstrual cup so let's cut the mother some slack here.

Given the body shaming there is in all cultures around menstruation, it is entirely possible that the mother of this young woman just doesn't trust menstrual cups. She probably isn't familiar with them herself and we all tend to distrust the unknown. Maybe she just doesn't want her teenage daughter to have the social embarassment of blood leaking through her clothing if the cup is incorrectly placed.

Her daughter would probably get further along in the discussion (and mother/daughter relationship) if she were to ask her mother "why" and maybe offer to compromise, using pads as well etc. at least to start with.

Maybe the mother just doesn't want the extra mess to clean up in the bathroom - teenagers are not known for their scrupulous cleaning up after any bodily function and mothers of teenagers can need strong stomachs.

PS My two teenage daughters were absolutely horrified at the idea of menstrual cups. One is content with tampons, the other uses both tampons and pads. It's their personal choice.
