Betty sketched these vulvas for the release of her international best seller Sex for One. Scarleteen and Planned Parenthood have reproduced these images as a sex education resource. Knowing that there is a range of vulva types has healed millions of women.
This is the magazine article that launced Betty's career as a writer. Originally, Betty wrote 18 pages for Ms. Magazine writing first person about her sex life focusing on the love affair she was having with herself.
It was cut down to 3 pages BUT if readers wanted the full version they could mail a $3 check to Ms. Magazine and receive her complete manifesto "Liberating Masturbation". Betty was on the west coast living at the Castro when the $3 checks came pouring in. Nothing was written...she didn't even have a bank account...all she had was a title.
It all started with Betty's memoir - audible wanted the rights to release it as an audiobook. I've always seen the memoir as the perfect audio-erotica piece. Then we decided to release Sex for One and Orgasms for Two as audiobooks first followed by Betty's memoir after the first of the year.
Susie Bright quarterbacked the whole Betty Dodson audiobook initiative. I love the way she describes Betty's work:
"The only female orgasm primer you’ll ever need— now in audio! This has been a dream of mine, to make this happen. I consider Betty my fairy godmother— she always comes through.
We had a bang up friday last week on D&R. Salon.com interviewed Betty about the current state of masturbation in the culture (to celebrate the release of Sex for One as an ebook) and my interview with Jincey at Juicy Pink Box on "Why Women Hate Porn" ran on HuffPost.
Here are my favorite quotes from our interviews:
Salon: How closely is masturbation tied to women’s rights?
It's been a long time since I've been on here. I wasn't sure if this was a rant, confession, or really what this would be called so I've just filed it under "general".
The last time I was on here, I was going to add a 2nd upload to the genital gallery. I had spend an entire afternoon trying to come up with decent angles, lighting and settings to artfully show my penis. I wanted to show it. I was proud of it. When I logged on to share it, I realized the geintal gallery was taken down. I can't put into words how devastating this was to have my previous submition removed. It led to so many horrible thoughts not limited to self hatred and shame.
Here is a question that I answered via email from a woman who attended my food and sex co-presentation. I'm planning on making an audio version for sale too. I listed this position on the PowerPoint slide we used for suggested positions, however, the presentation moved on before all the positions could be described. The "right angles" position was one of them. We'll call the woman asking the question Sienna. Her reply to my answer is below as well. The pic I used for this blog post is from Sex For One from a drawing by my mentor, Betty Dodson. She and her late webmaster, Grant Taylor, counted this position among their favorites.
