I Don't Think I Have a Clitoris

Dear Dr. Betty,

I am a Muslim girl and I shouldn't be wondering this but I can't help it. In my country, when a girl is born they perform clitoridectomy where the clit is partially removed. I asked my mother why they do that and she said it's so that the girl won't orgasm easily so they won't turn into "bad" girls. I'm really upset by this because I thought after I get married I would get to experience the kind of feelings the characters from those erotic books feel (another thing I shouldn't be doing is reading erotica).

Egyptian Girl Fighting for Her Orgasms Despite FGM

i had FGM when i was 12, now i'm 22 and never had any kind of sexual experience in my life, never been touched by a guy, i'm afraid i won't feel anything. i tried masturbating and there's nothing, it's ticklish down there but no pleasure at all. I have part of my clitrois left..there's a very small part left.

Where i live (egypt) there's nothing such as reconstructive surgery..so is there any advice on how i can have a normal sex life?? or at least a satisfying sex life? i know you met many women who had FGM and maybe you have some advice for me.

Dear R,

Fortunately the clitoris is a much larger organ than the tip of the glans which is what we can see on the outside. The clitoris is quite extensive. Here's a link to me drawing the internal clitoris.

My Clitoris was Removed. Sex is Painful.

Hello Doctor Betty,

My name is H. and I live in the United States. I am of an African descent and as a young child, I was robbed of my sexual pleasures. My clitoris was cut off in the name of tradition and now that I'm older, I'm having problems with my sexuality. I have severe pains during intercourse and a very painful manstural cycle. I am very uncomfortable having sex because I don't want my boyfriend to find out. This is really interfering with my life and I was wondering whether you could help me, please. Thank you.

P.S. I heard about you from the clitoraid.org program.

Dear H,

Kenyan Girls Refuse to "Be Cut" Choose Education Over Marriage

This video on young girls refusing to be "cut" is inspirational.  I promise there are no graphic images.

FGM in Africa is all about the dowry and selling a daughter for marriage. To think that fathers agree to remove their daughters clitoris and labia just to get a dowry that consists of a cow or two is horrendous. The group of women who are intervening and the girls who are rebelling are the real heroes. As well as the father who finally sees his daughters education as a better deal than cows.

Hi doctor,

I am 26 years old female. I had Circumcision when I was 6 and I have been suffering since then. I heard about the procedures that you perform in Clitoraid and I want it desperately. Please tell me where I can get such an operation. I am located in Kuwait but I will be visiting United States from 20/11 till 30/11. Please give back the hope of having a normal sexual life and being a complete person, I am so in pain.

Thanks a lot for your time.

Dear S,

My Clitoris Was Removed...How Can I Experience Pleasure Without Having Penetrative Sex?

Hey Dr Betty,

I'm a 22 year old female and I don't have a clitoris. I was circumcised as a baby so find masturbation very uneventful. It is frustrating for me to say the least because I feel like I've been robbed of a God given gift! So my question is how can someone like me receive pleasure without having penetrative sex?

Thank you

K

Dear K,

The best revenge for this inhuman religious practice would be success in achieving orgasm by discovering the internal clitoris and learning to enjoy sexual pleasure inside your vagina. If you are avoiding penetration for your future husband, then you must wait.

My Position on FGM at Cornell University & Intersex Surgery

The blogosphere is littered with posts about female genital mutilation happening today, right now at Cornell University with boingboing's Female Genital Mutilation at Cornell? It's Complicated leading the charge.  This is my official position on intersex surgery and why we must rescue our sex organs from religion, unnecessary medical procedures and institutionalized heterosexuality.

Some Background

1 in every 2000 babies will be born with ambiguous genitals - 1 in every 2000 babies will be born with red hair.  If you've ever met someone with red hair, you've met someone who is intersex.

Dr. Poppas, a pediatric urologist at Cornell University, recently published research dealing with his new technique for modifying the oversized clitorises of baby girls. For these girls- and other children born with a variety of intersex conditions- genital surgery in infancy is standard practice.

The only thing that makes Poppas different is his new technique to preserve sexual sensation later on in life.

From FGM to Reconstructive Clitoral Surgery, Women Speak Out in Support of Clitoraid

This press release from Clitoraid sums up our feelings exactly - the women who've benefited from Clitoraid's efforts can't thank them enough:

The San Francisco Chronicle, through Caille Millner's April 14 column "Wrong Approach to ending Genital Mutilation, successfully bullied the San Francisco-based store Good Vibrations to stop all fund raising activities for Clitoraid, a nonprofit organization that offers clitoral repair surgery for victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) both here in the United States and worldwide.

Millner and other critics following her lead have questioned the safety and validity of Clitoraid's reconstructive surgery and expressed concerns about where the donated funds are going. And they say Clitoraid didn't do an impact study to see how repairing the women's genitals would affect their local communities.

Kenyan Girls Flee Genital Mutilation

These young girls are my heros.  Betty hates it when they refer to excising young girl's clitorises as circumcision because they're not removing a piece of skin but removing a woman's entire sex organ but this is great coverage by the BBC:

At least 300 girls in south-western Kenya have fled from home and sought refuge in churches in a bid to escape forced female genital mutilation (FGM). The girls, some as young as nine, are at two rescue centres in rural Nyanza province, police told the BBC.

Female circumcision is banned in Kenya, but remains common in some areas where it is considered to be part of a girl's initiation into womanhood.  The traditional ceremonies take place between November and December.  The girls in Kuria District are now in the care of the two churches and Maendeleo Ya Wanawake, a women's organisation.
