Sophie Emma Rose Normalized Breastfeeding Your Toddler

I remember the first time I viewed this video.  Grayson wasn't even a thought back then but it made a huge impression on me.  Sophie Joy and her son Shay seemed so happy and healthy.  There was something so real and touching about her and the relationship she had with her son.

Last week Sophie Joy was killed in a motorcylce accident in Thailand.  Our hearts go out to her family.  Her loss is felt throughout the world.  As I was breastfeeding Grayson this morning (he's two years old now), I kept thinking of Sophie and Shay.

Sexualizing the Mother Child Bond

Both of these images were posted online and got a slew of negative comments.  Apparently, breastfeeding your toddler as you prepare for your second birth and kissing her 4 year old son on the lips (thank you, Hillary Duff, for posting this picture) is offensive and sexually inappropriate.

The bond between mothers and their children is so strong and so intimate.  When I breastfeed Grayson, we giggle, recite our new words, trace each other's ears and belly buttons.  In other words, we share tenderness and touch.  And, for the record, I kiss my son on the lips.

Breastfeeding Your Toddler is Your Choice

I applaud Thandie Newton for posting this pic of herself breastfeeding her two year old with the caption, "This is what my body is made for. And the rest is my choice. #Freedom.".

Of course, the conservative blogs ripped into her, pixelating her breast where her child is latched on (not really sure why because there's no nipple. I had to go to Thandie's instagram page to find the original version) and calling her out for breastfeeding her two year old.

I Knew Having Grayson on My Nipple was Best

Grayson is 6 months old and I'm still breastfeeding round the clock. He loves yogurt and bananas in the morning but always finishes up breakfast with a breast nosh.

I do all the things the "experts" frown upon: I nurse on demand and during the night because he sleeps in bed with us. And I've taken alot of heat for not pumping my breast milk. I did it - I had the pump sitting in his room for months but I couldn't bring myself to hook it up and put my milk in a bottle.

More Sexual Satisfaction From Breastfeeding My Son

Hi Betty,

I just gave birth on October to a beautiful little boy. I had to have a cesarean, and as with all births, I'm not allowed to have sex for around 6 weeks total. My question comes in with the fact that I'm breastfeeding my little angel.

The thing is, I have gotten more sexual satisfaction from breastfeeding my son in a few weeks than I have for ages with my husband. It's a sensual kind of arousal that relaxes and contents me and I have been able to have light orgasms. Is this weird? If not, may I have some words of wisdom to settle my conscious?

Thanks!

Dear L,

Breast is Best

August is Breastfeeding Awareness month. As our followers know, both Carlin and I support breastfeeding to give babies the best start in life with a strong immune system that's best done with mothers' milk.

The US Department of Health & Human Services, The Office of Women's Health and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have launched a breast feeding educational campaign to increase the number of breastfeeding mothers to 82% and to encourage them to breastfeed for the first 6 months of life. More importantly, they're putting $ behind it.

My Favorite Pic From the Hollister Breastfeeding Protest

Women descended on Hollister stores en masse in support of the woman kicked out of a Hollister for breastfeeding in Houston.  You can view all the pics here

They Just Have to Sexualize Breastfeeding

My long term friend Steveanne Auerbach also known as Dr.Toy, sent this article about the new Breast Milk Baby Doll. The doll includes a halter top for little girls to wear while playing with their doll - it has sensors sewn into it so when they hold the doll to their chest suckling sounds are prompted.

Of course we might expect in sexually repressed America that a doll encouraging breast feeding would cause an uproar:

"I just want the kids to be kids," Bill O'Reilly said on his Fox News show when he learned of the Breast Milk Baby. "And this kind of stuff. We don't need this."

There was a woman escorted out of a Victoria's Secret for breastfeeding in the store.

You can use "titty" to sell product but not for their intended purpose because it's indecent.  Oh, America.

Breastfeeding in Public is Beautiful

Carlin recently posted about breastfeeding in public not being a big deal. Some of her Facebook friends got pretty worked up and it sparked quite the conversation. So I thought I’d post some beautiful pics of Maggie Gyllenhaal nursing in public and say a little something more.

I love everything about these. I love that she nursed publicly and obviously. I love that the paparazzi took pictures. I love that she and her baby look so comfortable and that you see joy in her face. You can see the intimacy she and her baby are sharing. You can see pleasure and play.

Teaching Erotic Breast Stimulation

At the end of this month, I'm going to do my first class teaching pregnant women and their partners about how to enjoy sex more before birthing. My presenting partner is the group www.babyzonenyc.com.

I was encouraged to not go into teachings about breast erotics with the class participants because there are apparently already too many cases where new moms are choosing not to breastfeed their babies because the feelings of the sucking can naturally arouse a woman and cause fluttery-pleasant uterine contractions. Reportedly, the last thing these women want is to feel turned on with their baby. They opt for formula in a bottle instead, so I'm told. I agreed to keep erotic breast stimulation off the menu for my presentation. I want to comment on this situation and ones like it, a topic that Betty Dodson and I have discussed off and on over the years.
