Can Masturbation Make You Infertile?
Dear Dr Betty,
Last time, when I'am still a young girl, i think around 10 years old (before my menstrual period), i feel curious of my genital area, I used to touch it when I study (my hand maybe dirty), sometimes i even used some brush to clean it and apply some perfume powder on it... Then, around 12 years old, i had a habit of masturbation, i would masturbate 1 to 2 times a day, sometimes even masturbate with some sharp objects... However, I didn't experience any genital area bleeding. Sometimes after I masturbated my genital area felt itchy and it was painful when I urinated but it just last less than a day.
Since then, I tried to stop masturbating... So far my menstrual period (since 12 years old, my 1st menstrual period till now) is very regular, maybe sometimes before period, i may feel vaginal itchy and have some pure to light yellow vaginal discharge..... Recently, i started to come across the importance of the genital area and I know that when girls are still young, our vaginal and genital area is very weak. Thus, I feel very stressed and worried when I think back what I did last time, I worry what I did last time may cause me infertility in future??? Doctor, can you give me some help??? Is my reproductive system normal??? However, I am still a virgin, my genital area doesn't have bleeding, I don't have abdominal pain and my period is regular.... Thus, when I visit doctor, they cant help me do pap smear or pelvic test... They just breifly see my genital area, and said I am ok and my genital area is healthy....
Doctor, can you give me some explaination??? I am very stressed and scared, everyday, I cant sleep well...Can I know is there any reproduction area infection which is without any sign and symptom or any sign of future infertility which without sign and symptom???? Can I still deliver a baby in future???
Thank You doctor...

Dear C,
Instead of trying to STOP masturbating, I recommend you do it better by using a clean massage oil without any chemicals or perfume. Read my suggested steps under "First Time Orgasm" and follow them. By now you know to never use any sharp object on your vulva. The mucous membrane of our genitals heals quite quickly so I doubt there is any thing seriously wrong with yours. Stop worrying and be sweet and loving with your vulva. Exam her in a mirror with both hands and get to know all the different parts. Keep reading around the website and learn more about your sexual response. As for your itchy vaginal discharge, this too is something most of us experience at one time or other. You can Google "vaginal discharge" and read all about it. I also seriously doubt you are infertile due to masturbating poorly when you were younger. Now enjoy your sexuality with yourself until you find a partner.

Dear Dr Betty,
Thank you for your reply...
I will my best to cope with the stress and nervous... Meanwhile, I also trying to reduce the number of times I masturbate because I really scare it will cause me infertile in future or affect my genital area.
Beside, doctor, can i know, whether it will bring any effect when I masturbate during my menstrual period???
Thank you..
C
Dear C,
There has never been any mention in research or in my own private practice and lengthy experience that masturbation has ever caused a woman to become infertile. i don't know where you got that idea or how I can help you to change your mind. Your fearful sex negative attitude about masturbation is the problem you need to address, not the act of self-pleasuring. Stop touching your clitoris if you must, just know that it has nothing to do with having a baby later on when you chose to get pregnant. That said, having an orgasm with self-stimulation often helps to bring on a woman's period which reduces the discomfort of cramping.
