This is kind of a personal question you are asking people to answer.
Perhaps you could enlighten us on what kind of project this is you are doing, and people might be a bit more open to answering you.

Just doing it for a class I'm taking. Getting numbers on people to see what an average of partners could be from a certain age group and what they have in common.

This still isn't clear to me.

I purposely don't keep count because I think numbers are unimportant. I'm 37 now and lost my virginity at 13, but didn't really become sexually active until 17 when I went to college. I was married and monogamous for 12 years between the ages of 22 and 34 so if you're talking about 'averages' by age group it certainly wouldn't apply to me.

Another problem is that the phrase "had sex with" is amorphous. I have had intercourse with people I don't consider that I've been intimate with, and I've been intimate with people I haven't had intercourse with. I seriously wouldn't know how to define that term and have probably forgotten some experiences just because they were so, well, forgettable.

Do you want just plain intercourse numbers? Cause I don't keep count of those either. I've been sexually active for the past 10 years, and i'm 27, but I never intended to keep a count, and have not. I'm not sure many people here on this forum have. I like to think we are a bit more open about these things than the general populace, and so, see an acounting of numbers as a mundane act.

I know how many relationships I've been in, but again, that's also something that's subject to definition. Some people would call my own count high, as far as relationships go, cause I might include things that others wouldn't have seen as one. Whereas others might call my count low for similar reasons.

Keep your questions simple, that's what I always found works.
Do you want to know about Sexual Intercourse, or Intimate encounters, or perhaps relationships.

Well, that's sort of my point. The question seems to make intercourse, no matter the circumstances, more important than true intimacy, or "partnership". I have had far more sexual partners than people I have had intercourse with. And yet in this question you would probably have to count even instances of rape if a penis was inserted into a vagina (I apologize if that's overly dramatic in order to make my point).

I'm sure I could have answered this question at 22 as I had been juvenile enough in high school and college to keep a "little black book" of boys I had kissed and there was a special code if we had had sex. But when I married I truly thought I would never be having sex with anyone besides my husband ever again and my memory of my sexual youth is pretty much wiped clean except a few exceedingly memorable experiences which stand out like scenes from favorite movies.

Since then ... again, I could name a half dozen men who were sexual partners over a longer term, whom I really came to know well and as such were really able to pleasure me. And a few one-night-stands. But there are others I know I 'hooked up with' and yet I couldn't remember how. I might say, "yeah, I had sex with him" but then he'd point out that he only went down on me and I'd have to remember that's right, I never even saw him naked, I only remember a slice of the moment and afterglow and have to assume what did or didn't happen. Similarly, I'm sure there's at least one experience where I'd nearly swear I didn't have sex but if he said something like, "you don't remember I pulled you into the bathroom at that party for a quickie when we were both drinking and horny?" and because it was such a minor and sexually unsatisfying scene in an otherwise long friendship/acquaintance it would have completely slipped my mind. Frankly, I'm better remembering things like, "are there things in our past that his current girlfriend would be better off not knowing if we still hang out as friends?" without remembering specifically what those things are.

Still, as far as numbers, I'm sure it's far fewer than 100 men, but likely more than 30. The four women I all remember very, very well.

You're making this far more complicated than it needs to be, K.
People you've slept with = Sexual partners. Handjobs/finger-fucking, BJs/Carpetmunching, full on intercourse, it all counts. At least in the context of classifying someone as a sexual partner. Otherwise lesbians would all be virgins, right? :P I wouldn't count a rapist as a sexual partner, because they arent a partner in any sense of the word. They're predators, assaulting you and taking what they want.

I admit that I'm still lost. I really have NO IDEA where you draw a line with regard to when someone becomes a sexual partner as I would totally disagree with manual stimulation of the genitals being anything close to sex. If you're counting every open-mouthed kiss or consensual grope as becoming a sexual partner, then I'm sure my numbers are closer to 200. Good god, I've had orgasms from fully-clothed grinding while straddling my lover and yet none from being penetrated or stimulated - but they're both considered sex? And intimacy?

Seriously, I would have considered this question to mean an activity from which pregnancy would result (or in the case of lesbians a simulation of such activity). If you're saying that by masturbating someone that I've already had sex with him and oral sex or intercourse doesn't make a difference on any level, I have to argue that as being ridiculous to my point of view. I would never ever equate to having held an ejaculating penis to having had sex with someone.

And yes, I think that the definition of a female virgin is an unbroken hymen by the act of another, so if lesbians are only having oral sex without finger or toy penetration, I would view them as virgins, although I don't even know why it's that important what *I* think. What's important is what they think of their level of intimacy. Which brings me back to the point as to why I think the question is kind of silly. A prostitute could have had sex with a hundred customers but never true intimacy with anyone; another person could have had intimacy with a hundred people but never actually have penetrative sex with any of them ... and both could answer the question as either 100 or none. What is being measured and why? IN THIS DAY AND AGE, WHY ARE WE BOTHERING TO ASK OR ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS??

Well, I agree with you Kayten on a lot of your points. But for this survey, the purpose of which I'm still kind of curious myself about, I think DT is looking for sexual intercourse taken down to the simplest levels.

I would suggest the questions should be have had sex with.  You shouldn't use euphemisms in scientific studies.

Some background:  Not many in my twenties, a few more in my early thirties and a lot more in my late thirties and early forties, back to being monogamous for the last 4 years.  I would say about an average of 10 per year in my late thirties and early forties, which is actually less than one a month and when you think about it, that isn't really having sex that much.
