Better Orgasms. Better World.
I try not to get too political on the boards but I have such a hard on right now. I'm not sure if you caught the new issue of Time magazine but we have become a nation of idiots. 1/3 of high school students will drop out of school and never graduate. And another 1/3 receive such an inadequate education that they won't be able to find employment. In fact, Poland and Turkey have passed us on standardized math scores. We are the richest country in the world yet rank #24 for education.
It's such a crisis (yes, that's what they're calling it) that Bill Gates has started a foundation to improve our educational system - he believes that in the next 20 years we'll be too far gone. There will have 3 generations of kids who don't have the skills necessary to get a job and earn a living.
I can't help but think where we'd be if Al Gore was in the White House. The money is there but it's all going for defense. Who the fuck are we defending ourselves against? And it's not like we don't know what can happen with a simple high jacking. And then we have Nipplegate, abstinence only programs, pop shots at Roe v Wade, bans on same sex marriage, and fucking bird flu. I just read an article about how bird flu wouldn't be an issue if we hadn't destroyed so much of the Wetlands. Now, wild fowl is mixing with domesic fowl and that's how we could have a pandemic.
We need to demand more, focus on education, clean up our environment, leave women and their right to choose alone, let everyone marry if they fucking want to, censor violence not sexuality, and join the rest of the enlightened world!
You say all that as if it's news.
The biggest oxymorons I know:
American Department of Defense. You guys have been involved in more fighting on foreign soil than any other country I know of in the past 200 years.
American Education System. India, a place with a MUCH higher poverty rate and a much lower poverty line, where poverty really means something, has a higher rate of literacy than America.
American Government Planning. Face it, you guys have a society of instant gratification. That's why you have so many fast food joints. People eat at Rotten Ronald's because they like the food and are too lazy to cook, and they get fat. (and act surprised that they're fat.) Kids drop out of school so they can enjoy their life NOW instead of 15 or 20 years down the line when they're educated and meaningfully employed. Your government is even worse. Bush doesnt make any plans for the future, he just does what will benefit him the most right now. Like invading Afghanistan (so he can build an oil pipeline and get oil cheaper) and then invading Iraq and convincing them to sign on with OPEC so that the "retail" cost of oil stays high and Bush and his oil buddies can stay rich.
Land of the Free. Yeah, right... not even going to touch that one. Just go read that article about the guy who got detained for singing along to a song in a taxi on the way to the airport.
You guys should all move up here to the cold north. Eventually one of the retarded monkeys down there will press the wrong button or piss off enough of the world and America will be blown to hell. Assuming that you guys (as a nation) dont find some more creative and interesting way to wipe yourselves out before then.
Education in USA
the rich get richer and smarter(private schools), while the middle class is shrinking and getting less of an education.
corporate greed has taken over, CEO's making millions to run a corporation into the ground and steal from the employees while school teachers barely make enough to live on. what more important role is there for the future of our country then educating our youth?
the current administration in the white house (i can't even say his name any longer) with their "no child left behind" is a joke. but, parents have to be held responsible too and stop relying on the school system and government to raise their children.
a glimmer of hope
eleni, isn't that why Rome fell because there was no middle class - just the wealthy and below-the-poverty line lower class?
But today there was a glimmer oh hope. NYC is at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to education. I think we're third from the bottom. Anyway, today the school chancellor proposed the following:
Rank schools with a letter grade with A being the best and F being the worst. Provide monetary rewards for high ranking schools. Don't take $ away from low ranking schools but provide monetary incentives if they improve, have officials from high ranking schools come in and show them how to succeed, and if they don't after a specified amount of time close the schools down.
Unfortunately, $ is all people respond to so maybe there will be enough incentive.
