Miley Cyrus Purity Ring

This is a bit of a delayed response but I was so fumed when I heard the hype about Miley Cyrus and her purity ring. WTF! This is all about those Vanity Fair pics that were completely tame and they're trying to spin her as the chaste virgin.
They did it with Britney, Jessica Simpson, etc. etc. Only Christina Aguilera had the balls to avoid the PR abstinence machine - ie virginity = higher sales among young girls or really parents are more likely to part with more money.
I can't think of one young male music or film star that they market as a virgin. In fact, I think it would dampen their career. If all young women are virgins then who's fucking the young guys in Hollywood? Maybe their agents. Why do we as a culture always have to put so much pressure on young women to deny their sexuality?

For the same reason that males are expected to be sexual, or strong/unemotional. It's the long accepted gender roles that affect both sides, albeit differently. Women are expected to hide their sexuality for all the same reasons that men are expected to be sexual, to not be soft or sensitive. There was at least as much pressure on me, as a guy, in high school to have sex as there was on any girl to not have sex. Maybe even more. It's not enough to simply say that a particular gender role is unfairly pushed on one gender. All gender roles and stereotypes need to be tossed right out the window entirely. But then, there's a lot of things about the way we as a culture raise our children that need to be tossed out the window.
