Aborting Your Rape Fetus is Destroying Evidence of a Crime?

It is a twisted form of logic, one that potentially imprisons female victims of incest and rape for having abortions, that is behind state Rep. Cathrynn Brown’s (R) House Bill 206. In classic double-speak, Brown says she introduced the bill as a way “protecting women” across the state of New Mexico.

Basically the bill insists that women must carry the fetus of their rapist or incestual abuser to full term - otherwise it will be deemed intent to destroy evidence of a crime. And that is a felony punishable by up to three years in prison. It’s hard to believe that the war against women can wage on in such an egregious manner.

Why aren’t dna samples enough evidence of the crime? Why does a child have to be born as a result of these horrific situations? What is the point of this insanity - other than to take a out of touch biblical ideal to insane extremes.

The bottom line here is that you don’t “protect” women by throwing them in jail for having abortions. There is no world that makes this OK.

Fortunately this bill is unlikely to pass, since Democrats have a majority in both chambers of the New Mexico state legislature. Yet sadly, the war against women rages on relentlessly. Because pass or no pass, this bill is just another vicious attempt to double bind and control women’s vaginas.

twisted minds

I actually appreciate both Lawrence's post and the fact that this legislator had absolutely no self-consciousness about introducing this bill. I have had liberals tell me and other women that we need to "dialogue" with such people to reach a mutual understanding. You cannot talk to people whose minds are this dysfunctional. There is something really, really creepy and crazy about anti-abortion activists, and every time they let the world see into their minds I am pleased. I think anti-abortion activism is summed up by signs held at a rally in Kansas: Save Our Unborn Troops.

A basis for future legislation

This proposed legislation is beyond cruel, coupling nicely with laws that permit the rapist to sue for parental rights and visitation privileges.  It has nothing to do with protecting anything or anyone.
My fear is that it will quickly be adopted by states that have republican majorities in their state houses.
Thanks for the thoughtful post.

Sex offenders are dancing in the streets as women fear reporting

Quoted from HuffPost:

Brown said in a statement Thursday that she introduced the bill with the goal of punishing the person who commits incest or rape and then procures or facilitates an abortion to destroy the evidence of the crime.

“New Mexico needs to strengthen its laws to deter sex offenders,” said Brown. “By adding this law in New Mexico, we can help to protect women across our state.”

-end quote-

Ahem,  this logic is a little odd.

Um,  so the sex offender is going to admit to paternity by paying for the abortion.

Who needs evidence for that?   That sex offender has just passed his treatment program if he is paying for the abortion,  (or birth for that matter) by taking responsibility for his crime.  BUT....

NOT GONNA HAPPEN.  EVER.

It is just punishing the woman.

And sex offenders go free.

Second,  it is going to restrict the woman from EVER admitting to being raped if she doesn't want the child.  So another double bind and a pointlessly phony reduction in rape statistics.

And sex offenders go free.

Third,  as was stated before,  you are now encouraging creepazoids to apply for visitation and custody rights.  Nothing like supporting healthy family values,  eh?

And sex offenders go free and get props for being family friendly.

Yeah,  those sex offenders are really quaking with fear now.

NOT.

So maybe,  once again,  religion rears its ugly rear and we get stupid legislation under the guise of getting tough on crime.
