Dolphins Have an Open Relationship Style

Dolphins are gay. Really. That is one of the many surprising findings researchers discovered studying the behaviors of 120 bluenose dolphins.

They observed a complex “open society” in which male dolphins exhibited periods of homosexuality, and saw males cooperating for sexual access to females. They also saw rape, organized groups, and epic battles in the quest to steal females from other dolphin groups.

Where most animals, including humans, form alliances to defend their territories, dolphins set up alliances around defending relationships. But even these relationships have a open flow to them, with dolphins groups splitting apart, forming new alliances, or even joining different teams all together.

According to researchers, dolphin relationships can be very high drama. That being said, there is no moral drama–like guilt, shame, or remorse–over homosexuality. Nor is there morality about switching partners. According to researchers, dolphins have an open relationship style. What this research does begin to tell us is that morality around sexuality is a human phenomenon. Many would argue that the ability to moralize is what makes us great. I would argue that our ability to moralize makes us neurotic and less able to experience pleasure.

What this also tells us is that our environment shapes our drives. With the seemingly infinite space of the oceans, dolphins have no reason to fight about territory. With human populations growing exponentially, we have lots of reasons to fight about territories.

It is an animal instinct to group, bond, fight and defend something. For dolphins, these fights revolve around relationships and females–and just plain old domination of other males. Sounds a lot like my middle school experience.
