I remember learning something my first year of film school. It wasn't exactly in the curriculum, but I would argue it should be.

"You have no business writing a story unless you have something interesting to say."

There's been a problem in the adult industry for quite some time. Porn - like music - is essentially free. Anyone with the tiniest bit of technical "know-how" can search out a tube site or download a torrent for most any film. So for the new generation of consumers, there is almost no incentive to buy porn.

Well, the music industry is changing its model. Independent artists are coming up with new ways to market their product. And fans who want to support those artists do tend to fork up cash - but they have to know its for something a little bit more unique.

Today, I attended a meeting on the topic of barrier protection protocol for the Adult Industry. It is my understanding that it was the most well-attended meeting in terms of adult performer turn-out. So I would like to congratulate everyone from the industry who made the time and effort to attend – especially those who spoke up and provided performers with a voice. I'm fairly certain this was the first time Cal-OSHA and AHF had the opportunity to hear from so many performers currently working in the adult entertainment industry.

The most important part of this post comes first.

Now I will attempt to explain why it's important to attend this meeting.

1. It feels good but nothing comes out. I think I'm watching cartoons, or Sesame Street. The images don't matter.

2. Dad lives alone but still gets mom's Victoria's Secret catalogs. They look nice. Also, there's a couple of boys on the block who blow each other behind a large bush. I don't know what that means yet. But they say it feels like a girl.

I prefer looking at the catalogs.

3. Dad gets cable. Showtime is free for a month. I discover Beverly Hills Bordello. The TV is right below my dad's room. So I watch it with the sound off. It's nerve-racking. And the parts without sex make me want to shoot myself.

After a month, it looks scrambled. Sometimes there are good nights. On the bad ones, I masturbate to blurry lines.

There's something beautifully awkward about meeting the people I've constructed as gods.

The last time this happened to me, I was standing in the back of a music venue on Wilshire Boulevard. A show had just ended and I was about to head home. Except I stopped to have a conversation with a casual friend. The friend just happened to be hanging out with Kurt Ballou, the guitarist of legendary metal act, Converge - one of my all-time favorite bands.

I gave him some speech about how the Jane Doe Tour changed my life when I was fifteen. And then I walked away. Thirty seconds later, I realized I had called him Ben (the band's drummer). So I returned to apologize – like, I hurt his feelings or something.

“Don't worry,” he said. “I knew you just meant, 'Guy from Converge.'”

Danny: You're Ashley Blue. Or used to be? Are you still performing?

Ashley: Yeah, I still do. I mean, I still do everything on the menu.

But I'm old. I'm 29 years old and I've done everything. Nobody wants to see my old ass in porn anymore.

And that's not up to me. That's for the viewers to decide. And I understand. You get sick of people, and you want new people when it comes to this tasty product that we call porn.

I’d be lying to say it didn’t all start out as a joke.

Punk was dead. Hardcore had become a commodified trend. And straight edge was a movement that never even reached my home town.

I grew up at the end of an era. The musicians I looked up to were already disbanding. Kids turned out to shows with more makeup than dignity. The musk of blood and sweat became slave to hair product and the scent of name brand perfume.

The first time I saw a straight edge tattoo, it was etched on the calf of a jaded, young man pounding forties outside his own hardcore punk venue. Whatever scene he used to belong to was gone. I only witnessed the death of his idealism filtered through a can of malt liquor.
