Misogyny is a Hate Crime in the UK

This is fucking amazing. Officially, in the UK, misogyny ie mistreating, abusing, harrassing women is a hate crime

Misogyny hate crime is classed under the new policy as "Incidents against women that are motivated by an attitude of a man towards a woman, and includes behaviour targeted towards a woman by men simply because they are a woman."

Examples of incidents include:

  • unwanted or uninvited sexual advances
  • physical or verbal assault
  • unwanted or uninvited physical or verbal contact or engagement
  • use of mobile phones to send unwanted or uninvited messages or take photographs without consent.

Just this week Betty and I were talking about systemic "sexism" (she hates using the term "sexism" because it demeans sex.  I don't think most people know what misogyny means). You're disbelieved, objectified, and harrassed at every turn and now we have the technology to "hate" on a much larger level. It's reassuring to know that some legislators get it.

I'm hoping that this legal reform starts the process of guaranteeing equal pay for women.  If you don't pay someone an equal wage because of their gender, how is that anything else but hate.  There's no justification.  In essence, the culture is taking your time and your value, enslaving you for no reason other than your sex. I've never heard a rational argument why Congress refuses to pass an Equal Rights Amendment for women.

This is a great start to some big things happening right now.  In Delaware, they just passed legislation requiring doctors, GPs, not only to prescribe birth control but to ask female patients if they want to get pregnant in the next year, and if they say no, breaking down their birth control options.  This kind of proactive reproductive choice is what we need to create equality in our society.  Women shouldn't bear the burden of figuring out when and how to get birth control.

I'm so bullish about this next decade. We'll have our first woman President and lots of change. What a wonderful time to be raising a family.

The whole of the UK is not nottinghamshire. Police can themselves instigate a policy within their region. Nottinghamshire Police have decided to class misogyny as a hate crime, this is not a nationwide policy. Only in Nottinghamshire can it be classed as a hate crime. Please read the information you link fully, it would be the same as a state in the USA classing it as a hate crime. i wish this article was true for the whole of my country but its a step of course.

Whatever you call it...

Whether it's classified as a "hate" crime or not, the incidents would be recorded as crimes across all UK jurisdictions, most likely assault which is defined quite differently in the UK.

In the UK around 50% violent crime involves no physical injury, since the threat of violence is also regarded as assault - something worth remembering when comparing US and UK crime statistics.

FYI The police in Nottingham have reacted to a campaign by two local women who have now faced a huge backlash on-line from misogynists around the world.
