Happy Birthday Dr. Dodson
You make 86 look good. I can't believe that we've been working together for 10 years. It's been the best decade of my life. Thank you for being you.
Wishing Dr Betty a very happy birthday and looking forward to another wonderful 10 years for the two of you!
Happy Birthday! I just finished your autobiography and loved it.
I'm sending birthday wishes to Bessie -- it's her anniversary too! Have a loud juicy one for me sweetheart. Love from your ever-lovin' (almost a senior citizen now) Baby Eve...
Happy birthday, Betty! Thanks for everything you do!!
When we reach a point in life where the road before us is so much shorter than that along which we have already travelled, I think it means a lot to know that when we are no more, what we have accomplished will be remembered for a very long time. Surely when she is finally gone, the world will not soon forget our friend Dr. Betty, American Pioneer!
Consider the massive, six-volume, 3000-page work titled: Encyclopedia of European Social History: From 1350 to 2000 (Charles Scribner's Sons, 2001), Amazon page here. It includes an 11-page section on masturbation, written by Lesley A. Hall, Senior Assistant Archivist in the Contemporary Medical Archives Centre, Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine, London, and Honorary Lecturer in History of Medicine, University College London.
It seems that even when writing a history of masturbation in Europe, one can't avoid mentioning a certain American named Dr. Betty Dodson, on account of the profound impact her work has had upon her nation. Quoting from page 1864:
Within the specialty of sex therapy, masturbation has found a medically licit niche. However, while 'self-pleasuring' may be recommended to develop responsiveness and familiarize the individual with his or her genitals, in most sex therapy this practice is implicitly a prelude to taking the knowledge and skills thus learned into partnered sex. In the European context, there is no real equivalent to the American Betty Dodson. In 1974, influenced by the sexual revolution and the second wave of feminism, Dodson wrote Liberating Masturbation: Celebrating Self-Love. Over twenty years later, her Web site celebrated masturbation’s potential for engendering an 'erotic renaissance.'
The vast proliferation of pornographic Web sites, phone sex lines, and other erotic media suggests masturbation is widely practiced in Europe, but that it is still a 'secret vice' exploited for commercial gain—though in rather different ways from those of the advertising quacks of the nineteenth century. After nearly three centuries, Onania continues to cast a long shadow.
The text quoted raises an interesting point which transcends well-deserved tributes to remarkable persons. Much of a generation has passed since it was written, and one suspects that the influential explosion of the global Internet has done not a little to expedite social changes in Europe and America both. So I think it is extremely interesting to study how attitudes to sex have varied over history and from place to place, because doing so disabuses people of parochial fictions, often violently reinforced by those temporarily in power, that the world could never be different from the one they know, and that if it was, everything which sustains life and makes it worth living would be destroyed.
Carlin, congratulations on your decade-long apprenticeship to Betty. If not her pubic heir apparent, surely you are the obvious Keeper of the Flame! And Betty, you still look more beautiful than many women HALF your age.
OMG happy birthday Betty! You look FABULOUS :)
