Not many young women were heading off to Paris to study painting in 1956.

I went to France at the exact age Betty did, at 26. What I love about this photo is that there is a kind of determination and maturity that comes through, a poise and self-assurance beyond her years. Even back then, she was charting her own course through life and you can see it in her expression in this photograph.

Cowgirl turned Paris bohemian

I see a lot of cowgirl in that face. And this makes clearer that Betty was a midcentury bohemian. While there, did she discover the French intact penis? Hmmm... 20 years later, my sister did during her junior year abroad in Paris.
