Counter-protesting with Humor

This part June the Supreme Court overruled a 2007 law that required anti-choice activists to stay at least 35 feet away from clinics. So now that can get all up in your face and it's legal *sigh*

In response, a North Carolina couple — Grayson Haver Currin, a writer for Pitchfork and music editor at Indy Week, and his wife Tina, a copywriter and creative strategist — has been protesting alongside pro-lifers every Saturday morning since March.

I love the humorous approach they take to supporting women's right to intentional motherhood. Their signs are brilliant. Here's how it all started:

"We were getting supplies for a garden box. We both grew up not too far away, and we've seen the clinic in question hundreds of times. But for some reason, on this morning in particular, the protesters got under our skin a little more than normal. I'm full of crazy ideas and jokes, and Tina tells me which rare ones are good. I suggested that we make a sign that said ‘Weird Hobby’ and point at one of the protestors. She loved the idea and vowed that, if they were there when we passed back by, we'd do it."

Wonderful.

At the risk of having Ms.

At the risk of having Ms. Ross yell at me (again) I gotta say while humor's great most of the time, inserting it into the abortion debate is ill-advised. It's a very (and sometimes deadly) subject for some people and making a joke out of it is like making fun of Muslims for not allowing graphical depictions of Mohammed. Some things you simply don't do.

What I'd suggest instead is since most anti-abortion types are religious and hold up religious themed signs, go to an online Bible website and find all the pro-abortion verses there are. And there are many. God it seems have no objection to killing babies in or out of the womb.

Site to get ya started here (and no it's not the evil and opposite Bible, it's simply a collection of all the actual Bible's 'evil' stuff like killing non-virgins on their wedding night.)

relevant excerpts:

Numbers 5:11-21 The description of a bizarre, brutal and abusive ritual to be performed on a wife SUSPECTED of adultery. This is considered to be an induced abortion to rid a woman of another man’s child.

Numbers 31:17 (Moses) “Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every women that hath known man by lying with him.” In other words: women that might be pregnant, which clearly is abortion for the fetus.

Hosea 13:16 God promises to dash to pieces the infants of Samaria and the “their women with child shall be ripped up”. Once again this god kills the unborn, including their pregnant mothers.

2 Kings 15:16 God allows the pregnant women of Tappuah (aka Tiphsah) to be “ripped open”. And the Christians have the audacity to say god is pro-life. How and the hell is it that Christians can read passages where God allows pregnant women to be murdered, yet still claim abortion is wrong?
