Better Orgasms. Better World.
George R. R. Martin is often asked why there's so much sex on HBO's Game of Thrones. I love his answer:
“I can describe an axe entering a human skull in great explicit detail and no one will blink twice at it. I provide a similar description, just as detailed, of a penis entering a vagina, and I get letters about it and people swearing off,” he said.
“To my mind this is kind of frustrating, it’s madness. Ultimately, in the history of [the] world, penises entering vaginas have given a lot of people a lot of pleasure; axes entering skulls, well, not so much.”
My sentiments exactly.
re: Game of Thrones
Very true.
Finally!
We here in Denmark get quite confused about the weird standards in American TV/ film. Kids can watch a person's brains come out the back of their head, but a nipple is deemd offensive. So strange, considering that most people will make love at some point in their life, but hopefully most will not murder or be murdered.
Myself, I always am disappointed when there is not ENOUGH sex or love in a movie!
Hating sex and loving death in America
As a Yank who has lived in Europe, attended a British-run school, and had many European friends, I can understand your confusion, lilhuna. I remember the healthy, matter-of-fact attitudes in much of Europe about nudity and sex. And I vividly remember feeling oppressed and bewildered when I returned to the States and found myself back in a society that the rest of the world must view as pathologically prudish and dedicated to the suppression of sex and the promotion of guns and violence.
This is an unfair caricature, of course, and doesn't begin to describe the millions of good, sensible people who live here---but there is enough truth in it to make me cringe. The problem is that those Americans unfazed by violence and those horrified by sex have an influence out of all proportion to their numbers due to the organized power of fundamentalist religion and groups like the National Rifle Association. You're right---in too many ways we have it backwards here. We really need to lose our national fetish for violence and the means of violence, i.e. those weapons of mass slaughter known as guns. Maybe when we let the free flow of healthy eroticism into more of our lives, we'll lose the sick obsession with having the power to inflict instant, violent death.
and thats why its a great
and thats why its a great show!
Well said, Patrick!
