Better Orgasms. Better World.
Last week I was at a corporate dinner when a gentleman - who is quite obviously a homophobe - brought up same sex marriage. He asked me directly how I felt about our "gay" president and whether Obama losing the Christian vote would hurt his reelection campaign (like Christians voted for him in the first place).
I love it when some asshole gives you the opportunity to school him - I'd just read a piece reposted on boingboing on same sex marriage. More specifically, how gay marriage was a common Christian rite back in the 11th and 12th centuries:
Prof. John Boswell, the late Chairman of Yale University’s history department, discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient Christian church liturgical documents, there were also ceremonies called the 'Office of Same-Sex Union', and the 'Order for Uniting Two Men'.
I dropped my bomb and waited for his reaction. The look of complete confusion and disdain on his face was so f*cking worth it. And then I ended with, "homophobia and misogyny are recent phenomena in our culture".
I was raised in a Christian home. I watched my family spiral into dysfunction swept up in the Christian revival of the 1980's - James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Jimmy Swaggart, and the Bakers were fixtures in my household. From my experience, I believe that Christianity has been perverted with fear mongering and hate speech. What we define as "Christian" today bears little resemblance to the Christianity of yesteryear.
If only we knew our past, we could have a better future.
ain't that the truth.....
The beliefs of most so-called "Christians" are pretty much a rotting garbage heap.
Fear mongering and malcontent, even among themselves is the rule.
As a Believer myself, I have found most other Christians to be the worst back-stabbing excrementory orifi that I have ever had the displeasure of knowing.
Acting all 'holier than thou' on Sunday, while spending Monday through Saturday meat-shafting other people up the arse.
I would still be going to church, if it weren't for the people there, so my "church" is my own backyard.
I broke out of the morals and morés of mainline Chrisianity to be able to leave fear and the restraints of curiosity behind.
I don't fully accept every one else's beliefs about every aspect of human sexuality, but then I'm not expecting everyone to accept mine either.
Not homophobic any longer either.............
I've met some damned fine Gay men.
That's amazing!!
When the British houses of parliament were completed in 1870 in a gothic style to pretend the United Queendom was 1000 years old rather than dating from the acts of union 1707 and 1800, we got this idea that how things were then is how they had always been, and that's how they're portrayed in popular history, in movies and historical fiction.
In many way's the people who are conservative tend to be trying to conserve that historical fiction, when on closer inspection, we find it never really existed.
