Dear Dr. Betty,

Is it safe having sex during periods? what are the pros and cons?

Kindly advise

Dear R,

Yes it's safe to have sex during a woman's period unless her flow is very heavy and she feels uncomfortable about it. In any case, you must make allowances to keep the blood off of whatever surface you are on. Some women use their diaphragm or menstrual cup to catch the blood. Other women claim intercourse helps to get the blood flowing which eliminates menstrual cramps.

It's also a time when a woman will NOT get pregnant unless she is "spotting" a bit of blood mid-cycle and confuses this with an oncoming period. Many women say they are especially hot when they are menstruating. The important thing is to ask how she feels about it and to let her know where you stand in terms of acceptance.

as betty said, yes its safe and she's not likely to get pregnant either. personally for me sex during menstruation is the best sex i ever have because there is more blood flow to the genital area (excuse the pun lol), what i would suggest is wearing a diaphram as betty said or if you dont use that form of birth control go and buy some Instead Softcups, they are basically the same except they were specifically designed for menstruation and are 100% safe to use during sex, with no mess too. but just remember not to go too rough or hard because during menstruation the cervix gets very tender so can become uncomfortable very quickly.

Be careful

In fact, you can get pregnant on a period, so it's always necessary to take precautions:
