Dear Betty,

I am in my early 20s and have always been using menstrual pads. But I am looking for a better alternative to pads. I read some of the posts on your website about DivaCup, and I am wondering if I should start using cups instead of pads? Also, which type of menstrual cups would you suggest for someone with no experience of vaginal penetration or using tampons?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Dear J,

Yes, by all means try using the Diva Cup. That's also the brand name. I haven't had a period for many years, but if was still menstruating I would use one for sure. If you find it difficult to insert due to little or no vaginal penetration, gradually start stretching your own vaginal barrel with your fingers, my Vaginal Barbell or an organic carrot carved down to a size that's manageable. Before penetration, spend time stimulating your clitoris and use a clean massage oil to ease insertion.
