What's the Best Birth Control for Teens?

Hi Doctor Dodson!

May I say you are my hero! I am 16 years old and you have allowed me to love myself and appreciate my body. I have always been open about talking about sex, and others told me that it wasn't "normal for a girl." You are truly inspiring and the reason why I just love being a woman even more. I am a virgin, but I plan on becoming a sex life coach just like you! I am currently on the pill just for the sole purpose of controlling my acne, and yes I hate it.

I love the videos of you and Carlin talking about the diaphragms. I understand that there are many forms of birth control, but you don't really hear a lot about diaphragms. My questions are do you think that diaphragms are a good choice for teenagers/young women? Does it move out of place? Are there certain positions that can move it out of place? Did you have any difficulties with it?

Thank you,
K

Dear K,

Since you are still developing, the last thing I'd advise would be the pill with all those hormones. The best birth control for teens is probably a condom but then you must be responsible and have them on hand and know how to use one. The diaphragm is the woman's responsibility alone and for that reason it's more likely to be used as she is the one who might get pregnant.

Frankly speaking, at 16 I was perfectly happy with kissing and sharing manual sex. My main sexlife was masturbation, petting and manual sex until I started having sex with a partner at 20. Your acne would be better controlled by diet rather than the pill. Acne is also temporary and there are lots of OTC products to deal with it. But good old Big Pharma gets bigger by selling us on the pill. It's your choice.
