Can You Get a UTI Using a Dildo?

Hi Dr Betty!,

Yet another question. Can one contract a UTI by using a dildo for both vaginal and clit stimulation? After doing that (no anal play involved), I got a wicked one that went into my kidney and I'm a little apprehensive about getting off again using that method. (Peeing fire is definitely not fun!)

I know you are not an MD, but thought your priceless experience might be able to shed a little light on things.

Dear M,

Just for safety sake, don't repeat anything that causes a UTI. However, I feel more than just your vaginal dildo was involved. Simple irritation of the urethral opening, rough handling of dildo, insufficient lube, etc. Also if the dildo was made with phthalates, most of us will experience irritation as a result of this toxic material in a product. Buyer beware.

I have had this experience myself. I found that D-mannose works wonders, both for active UTIs, and as a preventative. I take one or two doses after an extended self-love or partner sex session, and have found it incredibly effective.

When I was 16 and masterbating... often, I started having UTI's. My mom subtly told me that I should always pee after sex. (even when you have sex with yourslef). If you urinate after using the dildo, it might keep you from getting the UTI's. (it might feel slightly uncomfortable)
