Better Orgasms. Better World.
Dear Betty,
I'm a 29 year old who has long struggled with my inner labia lips not only for their appearance but for the pain I feel. Sitting for long periods of time, wearing tight clothing, working out as well as other activities are sometimes hard and are very painful for me to accomplish. As I try to become more aware of my sexuality, the look of my labia minor does not bother me as much as it once did. I have your site and self-exploration to thank for that.
However, the discomfort I feel is what upsets me most. Because of my self-esteem as well as having a past of being abused, I put off visiting an OBGYN for many years until I was 26. The visit was horrifying as the doctor made comments on how large and long my inner labia were. I left feeling like I was abnormal and a circus freak.
Needless to say I never went back to this practicing "doctor." I wish I could say I've been to a doctor since but that experience has made me not be in a hurry to return. The appearance of my pussy is something I could live with and learn to be proud of. However, the pain and discomfort I have (even while during sex) makes me wonder if having a labiaplasty would be a better choice in this circumstance. My question is: Has there been any research to show that pain and discomfort are minimized after receiving a labiaplasty? Are there any cases where having a labiaplasty could be the right choice? Thank you for the gifts you have given to myself and countless women.

Dear C,
After viewing women's genitals for over 40 years, long labia are the norm not the exception. Just stop and think, if your long labia causes you so much pain(?) or discomfort, how do you think men manage with testicles that are far more intrusive than labia? I'm sorry to hear some jackass doctor commented on the size of your labia. He probably has a small dick and was jealous. But I do suspect the "pain" you feel is more psychological than physical.
As the proud owner of long labia I too went through my form of psychological pain thinking I was deformed. But I never actually felt any physical pain. Dump the tight clothing. It isn't good for our bodies. I see women wearing jeans that are so tight I don't see how they breathe. My answer to labiaplasty is an unequivocal "no!" We never hear about the surgeries that went wrong or took a long time to hear. It's a made-up solution for women who fear they are not "normal' due to the extent of our vulva shame that is rampant here in America. Thanks to porn standing in for America's lack of sex education. Stay with us on the website and heal yourself with more independent happy clitoral orgasms.

My experience
I had labiaplasty on my left labia about 5 years ago. Similar to what Dr. B said -- I think that my pain was primarily psychological, although I did have some discomfort when running and when wearing tight jeans. Since my labiaplasty I have been much more self confident in the bedroom. However, my left labia has hurt after sex ever since. I'm not sure that I would do it again.
