Dr. Marci Bowers: New Clitoral Reconstructive Surgery Brings Hope to 140M Women

The Denver Post covers the work of Dr. Marci Bowers and the pioneering surgery that can bring sensation back to the 140M women who've suffered FGM (female genital mutilation).  Dr. Bowers went to France to study the reconstructive techinique developed by Dr. Pierre Foldes, which essentially cuts away scar tissue and surrounding skin to expose whatever is left of the clitoris.  In many cases the procedure also requires more extensive reconstruction.

Each surgery costs about $1,500 and Clitoraid is funding the surgeries (we're supplying text and video information on how to stimulate your "new" vulva).

I recently spoke with Dr. Bowers wanting more information on what were the chances these women could experience sexual pleasure again. She said if part of the clitoral stem remains along with the internal legs and bulbs, it would be possible.

The same as with uncut women who have not been able to feel any pleasure stimulating an intact clitoris, I recommend lots of healing vulva massage with a clean vegetable oil followed by clitoral stimulation with a vibrator. The African women have had the clitoral glans physically removed and the American women have been psychologically damaged through sexual shame and guilt.

After forty-some years of helping women discover orgasm, I'm clear about the excessive fear some religions have about losing control of female sexuality.

Reading this brought tears to my eyes. The horrible consequences of attempts to control female sexuality, whether through cultural and religious means, trauma, and/or FGM have long troubled me, triggering nausea, usually.

Reading this, my heart started pounding. I am so very glad to know of this important work. Thank you.

I am an american woman. 24

I am an american woman. 24 years ago when I was 15, the nerves inside my vagina that produce orgasm were removed as was the tip of my clitoris. Is there hope of help for me?

Dear Anonymous and scared

You might want to understand the internal clitoris a little better. Check out my drawing one on the website. The clitoris has much more to it than the tip or glans that is visable. It includes the clitoral shaft, the legs of the clitoris and also the bulbs. All of that is eretile tissure. Dr. Browers says if some of the clitoral shaft is left, there is hope. You would need to be seen by a doctor who understands this and it's surprising how few of them do.  Last I heard Dr. Browers was moving to San Francisco. She would be the one to consult.
