Am I a Feminist & How Do I Become a Sex Educator?
Hello I have been reading though the blogs on your site for about 2 weeks now and FOUND some GREAT INFORMATION that I would never have read anywhere else in my life. So I have to say THANK YOU for posting all this Educational articles about SEX and Life. I thought I was bad or wrong to enjoy masturbation I thought I was broken like most women because I could not achieve orgasm though intercourse. I feel like I have been liberated. I know now we women are not designed to achieve an orgasm though penetration we have a clit we and need to use it. I read The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm by Anne Koedt it was so enlightening and will help me in Psy class with all that Freud CRAP.
Now to my question. I am a 27 year old mother of 2 (5 and 8 year olds) I live with their daddy but not married. I enrolled myself back into school and I want to become a Sexual Education Teacher. This is where I will begin I am not sure what classes I need and my college does not offer those type of courses so what should I include course wise to peruse that goal to teach sex ed to teens and young adults. I am in Roanoke Virginia so the options are NULL for me here so I know I will have to transfer to a online college to finish. I want to get my general studies courses out the way and get back into the game of going to school first before I jump online. Plus I need the social interaction of being in school it keeps me grounded to talk to some form of adult even it they are all under 25. As long as its not my closed minded boyfriend (explain later)
Also I am questioned by the word "feminist" when I was in school 10 years ago high school feminist was a bra burning lesbian that secretly wanted all men to die. Now that some people have evolved from that outlook I wanted to know am I a Feminist? I was always scared to talk about my views in high school cause they were not like my conserved counter parts. I even got into a fight cause I made the comment that women should stay in school as long as they can because technology will be to advance to do anything but flip burgers. She punched me in the back of the head. I and her got detention for it. So all my life I keep my mouth shut. I have been inside washing dishes and folding clothes for 10 years and I am ready to hand the apron strings my boyfriend and tell him to figure out how to do it just like I had to at 17 least he doesn't have a baby on his hip while he's doing it.
First we should hide Sarah Palin away cause if she's representing all women then we'll all go back to the dark ages. I believe abortion should a woman's Right NO MATTER WHAT the situation my be. There should be some type of birth control class that women and partner if willing should complete to get the point across that the money and experience could have been saved if they would have just TRIED TO PREVENT IT. Also I feel that Sex Education should be taught in schools NOT abstinence only but Sexual Education. How to put on the condom on a banana. 10 years ago we were not allowed to even have condoms in school. Plan B should be covered by insurance and so should Abortions but only so many. At some point a women has to say enough is enough. I also believe women have the right to be on the front lines if they choose to fight with the men but they have to be able to keep up with the same expectations as the man beside her no she's a girl we have to lower the standards for her. I do Temptations Parties it's a division of Adam and Eve so I am all about sexuality.
But my boyfriend (babies daddy) is still stuck in the dark ages. (I had that 17 year old mind set "I can change him") My boyfriend does not believe in oral sex on either person so no blow jobs for me or him, also we don't have any type of foreplay that's worth talking about. I sell sex toys for a living and we are not even allowed to bring a cock ring to bed much less a vibe. After 10 years and all this SEX TALK that I love doing I have found I WILL NEVER change him. I was not that independent until this year my son went into Kindergarten and I had a Oh Shit your 27 no job no money no house no husband and that's when I realized I HAVE TO STOP BEING Co-Dependant on my boyfriend for EVERYTHING. I've raised my babies to school age and NOW IT'S TIME FOR ME!
I started at Virginia Western Community College got government grant Aid (boyfriend does not think I should go back to school he's scared I'll met someone else). When he asked me the other day what I was going to school for I said just "general studies" and then he ask but "what are you planning on becoming" I told him "Sex Ed teacher" his response was "Why so you can teach people how to spread Aids" this is the type of mind set my boyfriend has and I SICK OF IT. I know that was to much information at one time but I am so excited about knowing I am not the only one that feels the same way about some things.
What ever information you can give would be helpful. And thank you in advance.
Dear S,
Welcome to the sex positive Sisterhood. The world needs more strong women like you. Working at selling sextoys to women in their homes is a great beginning for a sex educator.
Unfortunately, there are few schools offering courses and degrees in human sexuality. Go to the Quad S website (The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality) and search educational opportunities.
The most common course for entering the field of sexuality is usually the study of psychology. However, many sex researchers, educators, therapists and sexologists have had backgrounds in medicine, sociology, and nursing to name a few. One of our best sex researchers Alfred Kinsey was an entomologist studying gall wasps. Alex Comfort who wrote The Joy of Sex was a zoologist. Some educators have studied Eastern teachings of Tanta and Taoist religions. Other sexologists began by working in sex shops and a few segued from working in the adult industry. My background was the study of fine art. So there are many paths to getting involved in the field of human sexuality.
My Ph.D. in clinical sexology came from The Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco (IASHS), a private school offering advanced degrees in Sexuality. I was sixty-four at the time and the degree was based upon twenty years of field work running workshops for women, a book I'd written on female masturbation and a video documentary I produced of the workshops. I accomplished all of that long before I had any credentials as a sexuality educator. I was simply a brazen feminist determined to change the way society viewed female sexuality by liberating masturbation. However, getting certified as a sex educator is essential to teach in our school system. Meanwhile, selling sex toys to adult women is also being a sex educator.
I continue to believe that experience is still one of our best teachers. Meanwhile, I support you in your desire to become a sex educator for high school kids. It's so very needed at that age as you well know. I'm convinced that an important part of America's future happiness will depend upon educating the public about the pleasure aspect of human sexuality to heal our sorry world. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you!
Thanks for posting this, Betty! I was thinking about sending in a similar question to you. The SSSS link is super useful. Right now I'm finishing up my bachelor's degree in health education and I'm trying to figure out what exactly I want to do to continue my education further.
