Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks & Other Outlaws

Kate Bornstein is one of my favorite people. She is a transgendered woman who doesn't refer to herself as either male or female. She refers to herself as transgendered. Her book "Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws" is brilliant and featured in this month's OTI newsletter.  If you know someone who's struggling with gender issues, turn them on to Kate's work.

Here are some of my favorite Kate Quotes:

"Gender is so firmly entrenched as 'natural,' it's not often seen as a primary, secondary or even tertiary causative factor of our oppression."

But that's not the case for youth struggling with their gender. Kate has lessons in staying alive to share:

"We don't learn to shift identities for purely whimsical reasons...It's something we do in order to survive."

"The ability to control who and what we are or seem to be in the world is a life skill we learn through practice."

"All life forms evolve according to their surroundings."
